Op...Congratulations!

You can start by :

1. Organising a free career seminar by where youths in your community will be exposed to various career options in the formal and informal sector of the economy.......

2. Organising a free health awareness program where issues relating to hygiene, HIV/AIDS, STDs and dangerous effects of drug abuse will be highlighted.

3. Organising a novelty match between your community and a another friendly community.....just to have fun

4. Mobilsing youths in your community to carry-out an sanitation exercise at the health centre or primary school within your community.

Let me give room for suggestinos from others..

Congratulations on your appointment.

With regards to what you can do the first thing is for you to know who are your constituents (people who you are directly responsible to). Like the problem affecting the country of not having a proper database of its constituent, you also will run into problems of not fulfilling or satisfying your constituent if you do not know them. Hence i will ask that you do the following:

1. Define what and who you refer to as youth (age group wise eg. 15 - 35).

2. Get a database of these people in your community.

3. Find a way to reach out to them (maybe through bulk sms).

4. Compose a message to call them to action.

5. Find a dedicated phone number/whatsapp/bbm and email address (website or will be nice addition) which they reach you on to air their grievances and needs.

6. Be constantly in touch with this constituent to receive their feedback.

7. Work on these feedback rather than instituting project they may not need. The reason for this is that when decision is participatory people own the project more.

8. Surround yourself with intelligent people who although may disagree with you on some of your ideas/ideals, challenge you to be a better person.

9. Be approachable and have a listening ear and do not tend to throw the bath water out with the baby when disagreement occurs (easier said than done wink). Hence the maxim "focus on the message not the messenger".

10. Education is the key. By education i do not mean the four corners of ivory towers alone. Read wide, Read vociferously and your mind will be enlightened because this is the key to successful leadership.

Wishing you a success in your leadership tenure.

Toast to your success.!!! cool

PS: Update the forum as the tenure unfolds.

2. Organising a free health awareness program where issues relating to hygiene, HIV/AIDS, STDs and dangerous effects of drug abuse will be highlighted.

for idea#2 suggestions:

i). Decide on a suitable date for the event preferable (choose between Friday and Sunday)

ii). Locate a venue

Your options:

a) A town hall if you town already has one.

b) A hall within a school permises

c) A hall within your LCDA or LGA secretariat if the distance won't be problem

iii). Browse the internet for NGOs in Nigeria who are into HIV and youth advocacy .....

If contact 10 of such groups by phone or email at least 2 will be willing to send one or more resource persons to your event .
Remember you are not asking them for financial support....all you need from the NGO is to send health experts.

Another option is to ask the Community Health department of your LGA to send their staff as resource persons to give lecture to the audience.

iv) Carry out publicity...involve school principals, religious groups who can send their members for the event

3. Organising a novelty match between your community and a another friendly community.....just to have fun

for idea#3 suggestions:

a. Set a 3 man organizing/planning committee

b. Discuss the idea with the committee

c. Put a football team together (remember the are not pros..so anybody can join)...if a football team already exist use contact the leader of the team and have discussing with him.

d. Choose a date...allow for at least 5 days organizing and preparations

e. Contact the next community....emphasize that the game is strictly for fun O... grin

f. Make plans for items such as football and jersey for your team(the home team)...just choose a particular colour or rent jersey where possible

g. Do small publicity.....

Like someone has suggested, you can have a database of the telephone numbers of youths in your community...it help with publicising your events and programs
