Nmachi

The first time she saw Papa raise his hand at Mama, she had been two years old. She would never forget that day because it heralded the beginning of an era in the family, an era of a stern Papa who was totally different from the Papa she used to know. She couldn’t understand most of what was being said at the dining table but she saw Mama’s words obviously made Papa angry.

“It was from Mrs Oluchi like I told you but lets not talk about that now dim,” Mama said trying to place her hand over Papa’s on the table.

Nmachi could see even Mama was afraid of Papa’s strange mood.

He stood up from the table immediately and went to the room, she could see the fear in Mama’s eyes that mirrored hers. He came back a few minutes later brandishing a piece of paper. He dragged Mama to her feet pointing furiously at the paper.

“Does Patrick look anything like Oluchi to you? You think I’m a fool, oh, you think I’m stupid?”

And before Mama could protest further, his arm shot out and whacked her across her face. She was horrified to see the tears escape Mama’s eyes. She had never seen her Papa in a fit of rage as that night. He seemed to calm down a bit after hitting Mama and walked out of the house angrily. Her next instinct was to go to Mama’s side and comfort her but through the whirl of confusion in her two year old brain, she had sat there momentarily stunned and immobilized. She wanted to whisper words of comfort to Mama but her own confusion at what had happened left her staring curiously at her sobbing mother. Questions upon questions assailed her but only one stood clear in the midst of her confusion, Who was Patrick and why was Papa so mad at him?

As the years went by, it didn’t seem to matter who Patrick was because Papa found other reasons to beat Mama and it soon became a normal sight in the house to see Papa whip out his brown belt and let it loose all over Mama’s fair skin for even the slightest offence as a cold dinner. Nmachi wasn’t spared either, she had her first taste of Papa’s belt when she was five years old.

She had gone to Papa’s room looking for a piece of paper to practice her newly learnt writing skill and had found a piece of paper in Papa’s bedside drawer. She had sat on the floor right there and began to scrawl her numerals all over the paper with the pen she found in the parlor. Mama had come in and found her there and she’d been pleased to show Mama how well she doing at her numerals because she’d heard Papa blame Mama after her auntie in school had told Papa she was a slow learner in class. She expected Mama to be pleased but Mama had a worried look on her face and had scolded her for coming into Papa’s room.

Papa hadn’t been as mild as Mama in his scolding and had proceeded to show how displeased he was with his belt. Mama tried to stop him but that made him more angry and he turned on her too. She ended up with a black eye for her troubles and Nmachi came to the realization that the Papa she knew was gone and in his place was a stranger she couldn’t recognize.

She tried to evade Papa’s belt by being good but no matter what she did Papa seemed to always find a cause to hit her. It was almost as if he hated her and was punishing her cruelly for a wrongdoing she wasn’t aware of. She grew up with the consciousness of trying to appease him by doing the right thing in school and at home but even that never seemed to make him happy. And in the years that went by, she came to the conclusion that her existence would never make him happy.
