I bought a new Samsung phone for my Dad. The new phone uses a micro sim as against the big sim which his old phone uses. Because of this, he had to do a sim swap. After doing the sim swap at MTN office in Aba, MTN officials at the center told him the new micro sim cannot be activated until he offset the debt of Sixty-seven thousand naira (N67,000) accruing on that sim!

Up till then, the old sim has always been recharged and even had a credit of Six thousand, one hundred and nine naira (N6109). Never a time was he told that he is owing MTN.

He called MTN customer care number 180 and complained. The customer care officer on 180 told him his "debt" is not sixty-seven thousand naira (N67,000) but just four thousand, four hundred and ten naira,fifty-four kobo (N4410.54). He was told that once he recharges his new sim with that amount, the sim will automatically be opened.

He bought airtime of Four thousand, eight hundred naira instead and loaded inside the sim. Yet till now, the line has not been unblocked. Several calls to 180 has yielded no result as he was told to wait.

He has been waiting for months now.

His number is 07034144914.

Another friend of mine was blocked by MTN and told that he is owing about N100,000. When he complained at MTN business unit, the debt was reduced. Because he needed the sim to be working urgently, he paid the reduced figure and his line was unblocked.

Nigerians should be on alert over this kind of incident.

You guys are wealthy o, you and your dad. You went to buy airtime of over N4,000 in order to offset MTN "debt"? Na wah o. Me I would have just gone the easy way of breaking the sim and buying Etisalat or another network instead.

Honestly if not that the line has been my old man's popular line for many years, I would have advised him to ditch the line but the line is his main business line and most people know him with that line. Changing it now will pose a big challenge for him.

Take your dad to any of their office close by and save him and yourself the stress.

I have not. Must my dad visit their thread on nairaland.com before they do the needful? My old man has visited their office in Aba for this problem yet they kept quiet. He has called their customer care (180) for god knows how many times yet they have remained aloof.

Hahaha. You are smart but jokes apart, I m feeling bad for having thought of changing my dad's phone. If not for the micro sim swap, my dad won't have been a victim of this monumental fraud.

Hahahaha. You are smart but jokes apart, MTN is making me to feel like regretting ever thinking of changing my dad's phone. Who knows if I didn't buy this new phone for him, he won't have been a victim of this monumental fraud.

Not your fault dear, it's the fault of the people who live by preying on the innocent

Mehn ! look here, stop wasting your time settling useless accrued debts. Just get a new sim card on another network, and do a port. Port your number to the other network, preferrably etisalat. You will retain your number... but enjoy the service of a different network. #BoomBoom.

I have thought of doing just that but my fear is that since MTN has suspended my dad's number, the porting may not work. What do you think?

If you are able to call the number, from another line, then porting should work.

Although, according to the porting terms and conditions in América, your existing network provider, may or may not allow you to port if there is an unsettled debt on the line--

Maybe Nigeria may be different.

No. The number can neither make calls nor receive calls.

It is a postpaid number with a credit limit of N5,000 which means that anytime my dad exhausts the N5,000 , the line is automatically converted to prepaid and he will load airtime before he can make any call. This has been the normal system since eight years ago when he bought the number.

Ok. I 'll try that too but to be candid, MTN is behaving like a bull in a china's shop. They feel we Nigerians owe them a lot.

If it is going to their office, he has already done that. Though we haven't gone to NCC yet. Maybe I 'll try it. Thanks.

I have had issues with cutting old big sim into a micro sim. It doesnt work with the ancient old big sim. If it is the new big sim, it can work. My dad's old phone uses the ancient old big sim so he will need a replacement and not just a cut sim card for the new Samsung phone I bought for him.

Ok. In such case, welcome back would have worked.
