someone Accidentally Killed Someone - What Do We Do Now? Please Advice by whiteandblack: 2:35am On Oct 02, 2016
Hi good people, most times life really turn upside down for some people. I just got news today regarding someone..who is a commerce driver....accidentally killed someone last 2 days. I really hate seeing life waste. But sometimes you can't control something. And he has been arrested and in prison currently. I don't really know how we can go after this case and get this his brother out of this case. I have been praying but need solid advice from mature minds here. I will be travelling there soon, so i will know the right step to take.

Thanks in advance Nairalanders.

There really is no way to sugarcoat this because, as you said, he accidently killed someone; a manslaughter charge.
The only advice I can tell you is to get a good lawyer because unless if proven with unreasonable doubt the deceased was at fault your uncle should start preparing for his prison sentence which carries at least a 5 year stay.

Manslaughter is 5 years? That's not so bad. It's life in my country, which is pitiful especially for accidental deaths.

It starts from 5 years but if I'm correct can't go any higher than 15. Murder starts from 15 to life.

It's unfortunate. The worst part is the wealthy and powerful can escape charges of these sort but the poor masses face the full brunt of the law. Can't complain, it's the same in many countries around the world, even developed nations.

Accidental deaths would be better served by compensation in my opinion.

Your opinion but not the law. The family can come to such agreement however this is an exception not the rule.

You have two options
Your family to show remorse, beg the victim's family, sort them and the police force out. One of the driver's in my brother's company killed a bike man and his passenger. The case never went to court, along with a different murder case at the same station during that period. This other one a bank guard went for dinner, stopped by this brothel to drink, bought an extra bottle to drink on the job, slept and woke up screaming and died, police arrested so many people starting from the restaurant owner, cook and server, the brothel manager & sale girl, his colleagues at the bank. They all paid bail money of course. As long as the family can see it's an honest mistake, they would be inclined to forgive. I would have been different if it was premeditated murder. You need lots of money and humility

OR get him a good lawyer in a reputable firm, not those charge and bail ones. Take your chance, at most it's a few years in prison. If he's elderly, incline towards option 1 he might not survive naija jail. The driver had to stop work, his health was never the same after almost 2weeks in cell.

I'm just telling you your options, I dunno what I'd do. May we be safe and out of trouble.

Wow how do you people type epistle?
