Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by Outkast(f): 8:02pm On Nov 29, 2005
I've lived in N.Y now for about 5years and it saddens me.

My first year here in highschool was a bit rocky.Didn't want to be here so I was really hostile to people around me. I finally, one day heard them pronounce the name of a Nigerian. I'm so excited because I've been surrounded by people of the carribean who of course bond because of where they're from. I'll never forget her, her name was Njidekah Olisah.

Well anyway,I go up to her and i'm introducing myself. I asked her if she was Nigerian. You know what this girl said?
"My mum's nigerian, but my dad is jamaican, so I'm jamaican" which kain jamaican with the name njideka olisah? i was outraged. I just looked at her and said okay and left with utter disgust.

I must admit, she's not the first one, who has done it. The line. "My parents are but I'm not" When you're ass knows that you were born in isolo somewhere. I have another friend whose mother is south african and her father is from Rivers, she'll tell you she's South-African and not bat an eyelid. I see it everyday and it's sad.

What do you guys think?

hunnie! This is sumthing that gets on my nerve every day!

I just wish i can record my voice and paste it on here right now!

I fxcking hate people[nigerians], that say.. they ain't nigerian because

1. I was born in amaerica, jamaica, london....
2. My dad is nigerian, but my mom is american.. so i choose american
3. The stupidiest one is, i left nigeria when i was 7, now i am 16.. i dunno anything abt nigeria, i am a "resident alien".. so i am american. ARGHHHHH.. PUH--LEASE KILL ME!!!! angry

You know wat, talking abt this issue makes me wanna bite myself. I HATE people like this.

You can tell from all angle that they are nigerian, and they start talking abt they ain't nigerian. I walked up to an asshole of a girl, knew she was nigerian.. and she started to cook up the i was born in america sh!T. I was like.. but ur parents r nigerian right? She was like yeah.. and we lived there for 8 years. I was like... okay?? U r nigerian... she said, ermm.. NO.

You know wat, i ain't mad at people like this when they sumtims do that.. but the most annoying part is when they Say it as if, being a Nigerian is an insult to humanity! They say it as if... OHH HELL NO!, I am so not nigerian.
And when the god forsaken oyinbo man starts to talk bad abt africa, they be talking as if we live with lions and sh!t. I mean come on now!!! Come on!! I always get mad like a lion when i am in class and a disccusion like that comes up. I'll defend the whole of africa with my last saliva.. till i make it known to them that! We ain't wat they think we are. Although we have comma.

Back to the topic now. I am proud to be nigerian, african or watever. The whole i am an american citizen sh!t don't mean i am not originally from Nigeria. People need to stop that sh!t and be real.
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by layi(m): 10:52am On Nov 30, 2005
I usually was indifferent to such issues until i was embarrassed in a chat rooom once. We were all chattin like for an hr or two and err'one enjoyed my company until i told them i was nigerian. A room of 48 was empty within a inute..leavin me alone.
I mean why aint people realistic...why dont they judge peeeps on character rather than nationality. Americans are even worse pips so such Nigerians claimin other nationalities are Idiots to me...low self esteem baboons

@HA and Outcast u giyz r right it gets on my nerve too. when this skool session started we had a sitting chart and i saw diz gurlz name on it and she got a yoruba first and last name. i was excited because i love meeting peeps from nigerian so i walked up to her and i waz like hi i'm from nigeria too so can u speak any yoruba and she was like no! then i aksed her but u can say a few words and she said no. then i said but u at least know what comes means and she said no so i asked her don't your peeps speak it at home and she said her father does and i was like so y can't u speak it and she was like she used to speak it a lil when she was still very young so i concluded 4 her by saying so u can't speak it anymore and she said yea. so i left her! like wats up with them?
i got diz friend and she left nigeria when she was 4 so she can't really speak fluently but if we r togther she's still gon speak to me in yoruba. she didn't let leaving nigeria at age 4 stop her now dats what i'm talking about. i mean nobody sat her down and taught her how to speak and whenever she cums over to my house she alwayz kneels down on her two knees and greet my father in youruba!! so "i left nigeria  when i was 2, 3, 4 or 5 are not real excuses!!
I'm proud to be a nigerian. Gosh nigeria is so fun and i had some of da  best memories of my life there!!

Hello,

nice topic your having here.
I just want to share my experiences over here.
Im living in Germany actually and most Africans (no matter, where they come from), pretent to be from America. I dont know why, maybe it sounds more cool? None of those people would ever admit coming from Africa at all, even if you question them for hours.
I personally think, everybody should be proud of his/her origins

You guys couldn't have said it any better. Fxcking retards trying to be what they r not......... Have u heard the latest?? Our nigerian girls now claim to be "jamaican".. LIKE WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE! . I mean, i don't get it at all at all. Even ludacris said it, the best women are from Africa!

As if it's not enough that most nigerian claim to be what they are not.... They go about Tryna spoil the image of nigeria. If u don't want to be nigerian.. why not fxcking live your "americanized life"?? I am saying this because, i have met people that will personaly sit with asians, mexicans and all u hear them saying is that "once while i went on a "visit to ma dad's land.. in nigeria" i saw them baboons, monkeys, and everyone couldn't speak english, and they was all looking at me and blah blah, some of em wanted my money, and people be treating me like i was a celebrity. Stuffs like that just makes me want to kill a b!tch.

No matter what happens... i can speak yoruba, hausa and igbo.. any blessed day of this life.

Hi, you know I was born in the U.K.. My parents are Jamaican I am married to a Nigerian woman. She fortunately is proud of her heritage and we consider our heritage to be of the same roots. This problem you have described I have witnessed many times. One guy I know answered me in exactly the same way. "My dads Nigerian (quickly followed by) but my Moms American though". It is a complex issue but you know because of colonialism and the perpetuation of ideas about Africans being inferior we have all internalized this rubbish to varying degrees. its Had a negative impact on all of us. Tarzan films and the like didn't help either. We were all portrayed as bumbling fools. Maybee instead of storming of in disgust you could just say calmly (which I know is hard in the face of what seems like ignorance) "Dint you like the Nigerian side of you?" Maybe a duologue will open. If you got time for it that is, cos sometimes its hard to deal with stress.

there are lots of guys growing locks and telling Japanese girls they are jamaican. One arived in Ghana with a Japanese gir who thought vshe was going to Jamaica with him. She asked when are we going to Jamaica? He didn't even know wher it was. He then told her that his mom was ghanaian and his dad was jamaican. She was getting more and more anxious. He heard that my sister who is married to a Ghanaian was in town (we are jamaican born in UK) He requested to meet with her so he could get some Jamaican lessons and a little history from her as an aid to fooling the girl. My sister told him that we come ftrom a God fearing family and my mother would be disgusted if we pertisapated in such a deception. The worst thing about it is , the locks he sported were weaved. No man in Jamaica would do that. He'd probably vget shot as he stepped off the plain. LOL

Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by Outkast(f): 5:59pm On Dec 05, 2005
that's a good question snazzydawn.
What is so wonderful about it. I do know that Nigerians marry alot of them. maybe they're captivated by the culture who knows?
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by hotangel2(f): 8:49pm On Dec 05, 2005
Infact the oyinbo guys are also animals. Shebi tarzan was white?? he talked to animals and acted like a jungle boy.

brafick, thanks for that piece. i am glad ur sister didn't help him. He needs to suck his balls to get outta the mess he put himself in.

Snazzy, They choose jamaica cos it's where most black people that aren't from africa are from. jamaica is not in AFRICA... so you see.. When they are black and don't wanna claim africa (nigeria)... and they know they don't sound polish to pass for "african american"... THEY JUST SAy... THEY ARE JAMAICANS. i hope u get it?

besides, White people know stuffs about jamaica, you know the islands in jamaica, and all the carribean stuffs. I guess that's why our african wannabe's choose to say they r jamaican. Sad innit?

if you are born in like US/UK or wherever. Ur kids would say they r from that place. But as for you, you have to say where your parents (father) is from.
I have always known that to be the truth And the way it is. I don't know why people change it.
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by kellorah: 9:01pm On Dec 05, 2005

Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by Outkast(f): 9:18pm On Dec 05, 2005
We had a discussion like that in class in the sense that.
They believe if your born in a certain country then you are FROM that country as opposed to just being citizens. That's where that whole "I was born here" is so common.
I stopped caring, we don't want you. It's not by force to be something you don't want o be. That my thought
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by hotangel2(f): 9:53pm On Dec 05, 2005
Nahh, it's actually if you are born in gumbu... Your children are from Gumbu! If your parents were born in kosunu... you r from kusonu!. It's okay to claim citizenship of where you were born.. bust history keeps going. WHy not just say you r from where you father is to save urself some saliva? cheesy
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by nddy(m): 10:03pm On Dec 05, 2005
nice, but you got to understand why most people say that they were born here or there. It helps the person whom you are telling know or comprehend the way you view things or talk. People from various places view things differently. i do agree with you that where you parents are from would be same place place you are from. I think thats is true.

Of Course, what is wrong with Nigeria, that I will not be proud of being a nigerian , nothing to me, so yeah, I am a proud Nigerian.

There 1001 things wrong with Nigeria!
To start naming them, we will need a fresh thread where every nairanian will have something to contribute. This is a country where basic and necessary things don't work.

I am proud to be a nigerian not because Nigeria is a good or fantastic country
but because i aint got any other place but here.

Be proud of what u have.
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by Z4M4eva(f): 9:47am On Dec 13, 2005
So, what specifically did you find wrong with my post? I gave my opinion, and you gave yours too, you didn't need to reply to mine you know. rolleyes
Nigeria might have some economical problems, but that does not stop me being proud of being a nigerian, so I guess I didn't really get what you tried to put right in my post, not that I see anything wrong with my post.

I really love my country to bits. I tell you, so many european countries wish to have a country like Nigeria but it can never be exchanged.

What has made Nigeria wrong are the selfish,belly-aching, good-for-nothing,wicked thieves we've had in government so far. That is what is wrong with Nigeria and nothing else, AND THEY ARE THE ONES I CAN NEVER BE PROUD OF.God forbid that!!!
Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by theORAKU(m): 2:06pm On Dec 13, 2005

I'm extremely proud to be Nigerian!!

I've been all over the world and even if you gave me the choice, I would still remain Nigerian. We are a special people blseed with talent, humour and a wonderful heritage...no one else is like us and could ever be like us!! I even tell the oyi9nbos when asked that I'm nigerian and happen to have their dirty pali which is merely for convenience.

I'm even more proud to be an Egba man...a true son of the soil gangan!!

We have many problems as a country which are undeniable I still would rather be a Nigerian than be from anywhere else!!

Re: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by hotangel2(f): 3:57am On Dec 15, 2005
Doubleface.... I know that some people r just saying "they r proud" But deep inside them, they wish they could say, "ohh Hell no".

Seriously, sometimes i just look at Nigeria and im like, Why are my parents from there? Or why am i from there? But at the end of the day, Im still proud to be from there. Sometimes i get so tired of defending nigeria, and sticking to the "im proud of my country thingy", because.... as you keep arguing, more stuffs come up to go against wat u r saying. Anyways... i know Nigeria is not 100% puurfect.. but i am proud to be from thurr.

Rome was not built in a day, it took christianity 2,000 years to get to what it is today, The U.S and U.K are all more than a 100 years old, it takes working progress to get there and we will get there for those who find there are things wrong with the country.
