FROM BOWEN UNIVERSITY

INFORMATION ON NYSC 2016 BATCH ‘B’ SERVICE YEAR

The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) has today, 5th October 2016, informed the University of its inability to mobilize all graduates of the University for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ service year as a result of tight budgetary allocation of the scheme in 2016. This development affects all Corps Producing Institutions in Nigeria.

Bowen University has been requested to mobilize only three hundred and sixty-seven (367) graduates out of the nine hundred and fifty six (956) graduates eligible for the exercise in 2016. The remaining graduates will be given priority in the next mobilization exercise scheduled for early 2017.

Parents/Guardians as well as graduates are kindly requested to note that Management is already considering the criteria to be used for the mobilization of the allocated number of graduates.

Management wishes to assure you that the criteria that will be adopted will be fair and made known to all stakeholders.

As seen at Anambra State University, Uli. (now COOU)
Other Tertiary institutions can corroborate.

This country is a big joke. The institutions are required to mobilize about a third of the eligible graduates with the promise of giving the rest 2/3 priority next year. Now taking into cognisance that the recession is not looking to be ending any time soon, coupled with the fact that similar number of graduates will also qualify for NYSC next year, it literally means by 2018, some people who qualified this year will not still have gone for service. And mind you, some of them have been qualified since last year and some even before.

Now, without NYSC discharge or exemption certificate, you can't do your masters program, your chance of getting meaningful job opportunities is also minimal. It then means you're stuck in life because of a useless NYSC which adds little or nothing to you.

Hearing that we're the only country in Africa that does this unimportant compulsory one year service is even more hurting having in mind that we obviously to love our country the least in all of Africa.

Please Mr President #ScrapNYSC now!

Another crazy memo.
If NYSC were to be optional, that is completely understandable

The national youth service corps scheme has had its benefits in the re-integration of our beloved country, no doubt but right now it is just a forty year old idea that needs a total overhauling. it should be scrapped because it is doing a lot of damage than good.
Keeping students at home doing nothing because the law requires that we need the NYSC certificate for further admissions for masters in Nigeria and even Job placements.
Presently the NYSC has slashed all slots given to all schools, keeping more students at home while still binding them by law to do nothing, because without the services students cannot further their education or get jobs.
Let exemption certificates be given to those who the commission cannot not mobilize instead of keeping them at home for more months after spending almost a year at home.
we should not take this, as our future cannot be halted for a scheme that has lot its initiate goals.
"NYSC is a creation of law, only another law can repeal it"
So today we call on the entire senate with Senator Bukola Saraki as its head to provide us with that law to amend the great harm being done to our young generation.
