Samsung has announced that it is ending the production of the Galaxy Note7 and permanently discontinuing it worldwide.

The decision comes immediately after the company issued a press release asking users to power down all original and replaced Note7 units, and for retailers and career partners to stop sales and exchanges of the smartphone.

“We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation.” said Samsung in a statement yesterday.

The decision to end the Note7 production is the final step in a rather tumultuous journey. After being announced back in August and being met with generally positive reviews, the Note7 first came under fire — quite literally — after reports of units exploding surfaced on the internet. After 35 cases had been reported, Samsung issued an official recall of the device, which sent everyone in a tizzy and airlines and airport authorities calling for an official ban on usage of the device in several countries.

Samsung did what it could, replacing not just the affected but every Note7 it sold and issuing a new device with an updated battery pack and a green battery indicator so the customers and authorities alike could tell them apart. It even restricted the older devices from charging beyond 60% so people who hadn’t replaced theirs yet wouldn’t overcharge them.

But after the replacement units also started catching fire, most notably one on a Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore, which had to be evacuated when a passenger’s replacement Note7 caught fire, Samsung eventually asked everyone to power them down. And finally did what was inevitable and, some might argue, what should have been done from the beginning, pulled the plug entirely on the Note7.

We are waiting to hear from Samsung on how it plans to proceed with existing Note7 devices that are out there and also how it deals with customers who have pending orders.

It's not too late actually and a nice move after all. Samsung has eventually admitted defeat in this case.

We are hoping Nigerian retailers recall sold ones here too.

Nevertheless, this does not in anyway affect my affection for the Samsung brand.

I wish them well.

To win back customers' trust, Samsung should implement SolidEnergy batteries into their next flagship handsets since they are fireproof.

They can turn a bad situation into an advantage by leveraging on the experience to build a reputation as an industry leader as far as battery safety.

This is bad. The note 7 was about the perfect device.

RIP Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (2016-2016).

Too bad for Samsung, the note 7 is a really bad market. I can imagine if this kind of thing happened to Apple, then samsung would have capitalized on it for their next advert. Samsung next advert would have been ' WE PRESENT TO U A PHONE THAT DOESN'T EXPLODE '.

Or ' GALAXY S8, IT WON'T BURN YOUR HOME'

That is how much samsung love dissing Apple in their adverts.

They need to embark on a serious damage control to avert the disturbing catastrophe the device has brought on its customers, nonetheless the bulk of Samsung users maintain a significant brand loyalty to their products

I can't even fathom the billions that must Ave lost in this major flagship, it's so unfortunate

Let's wait and see the next step they intend taking.

I'm loyal to the brand any day anytime

Of course they will bounce back, they have the resources. But not denying they will need to really mske the galaxy s8 something special to win back lost customers. The s8 needs to stand out from every other Android flagships and maybe cut down the price ot throw in some incentives.

ALARMING EMERGENCY !
PLEAESE, ALL THE MODS AND MY GOOD PEOPLE ON AWESOME NAIRALAND,TAKE TIME TO READ,CONFIRM AND SPREAD. LET OUR ATTENTION BE DRAWN TO THE THIS ROT AND EXTORTION GOING ON IN LAGOS STATE HEALTH SECTOR,GENERAL HOSPITALS ( IGANDO, AGEGE GENERAL HOSPITALS TO BE EXACT). I AM SURE OUR WONDERFUL GOVERNOR IS NOT AWARE OF THIS HYDRA- HEADED MONSTERS REPRESENTED BY NURSES AND DOCTORS IN GENERAL HOSPITALS IN LAGOS.
OUR PREGNANT MOTHERS’ LIVES ARE IN DANGER O ! I HEARD A HEART-BREAKING STORY FROM A PREGNANT WOMAN WHO ATTENDED ANTE-NATAL CARE YESTERDAY IN ONE OF THOSE HEALTH CENTRES IN LAGOS. DELIVERY PACK THAT IS PROVIDED FREELY FOR THEM BY THE GOVERNMENT IS NOW BEING SOLD TO THEM IN GENERAL HOSPITALS AT N8,500. COCONUT OIL AND PAD AT N2000 WHICH IS COLLECTED FROM THEM ON THE DAY OF THEIR H.I.V TEST. IT MUST BE PAID BEFORE THEY EVEN LOOK AT YOU OR ATTEND TO YOU. DELIVERY CHARGE WHICH WAS N32,000 HAS NOW BEEN INCREASED TO N45,000 IN THE SPACE OF 14 DAYS (2 WEEKS) ,WHICH THEY NEVER SAW COMING. IT BECAME A HUGE RUDE SHOCK TO THEM YESTERDAY. THESE FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE DELIVERY !!!! IN THE CASE OF CS, IT WAS N45,000 TO N90,000!!!!!! ALL WITHIN 2 WEEKS !!!!! MANY OF THEM HAD TO LEAVE IN TEARS NEVER TO RETURN AS THEY DON’T HAVE HOPE OF RAISING THAT MONEY FROM ANYWHERE;LEAVING BEHING BLOOD DONATION WHICH THEY ALL MADE BEFORE ANTE-NATAL. THIS BLLOOD DONATION HAD TO BE MADE BY THEIR HUSBANDS !!!!!! MY PEOPLE, WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE ? THIS COUNTRY IS HARD. IN A DAY, NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ASK ME FOR ALMS ON MY WAY TO AND FROM WORK INCREASES. THE OTHER DAY, MY YOUNGER BROTHER WHO CAME VISITING FROM THE AIRPORT TO MY HOUSE WAS ACCOSTED BY FOUR PERSONS ASKING FOR ALMS. THE ONE THAT GOT HIM CLOSE TO TEARS WAS A CASE OF A MAN WHO ASKED HIM FOR DIAPERS FOR HIS CHILD. HE SAID THAT HE DOESN’T NEED ANY CASH BUT PAMPERS AS IT IS CALLED. WE UNDERSTAND THAT EVEN THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT FINDING IT EASY BUT THEY SHOULD TAKE IT EASY IF THEY ARE THE ONES BEHIND THIS UNTOLD HARDSHIP AND EXTORTION ON PREGNANT MOTHERS IN LAGOS. PLEASE, MY MERCIFUL GOV. AMBODE, LOOK INTO THIS. LETS SPREAD THIS UNTIL THIS WOMEN’S HOPE AND CHANCES OF SAFE DELIVERY IS RESTORED.
THANK YOU, NAIRALAND FAMILY.

Sad, the phone was pretty great except for that flaw.. I can't get the idea out of my head that someone might have sabotaged Samsung.. How can it be so hard to find the root cause of this problem unless something alien to the manufacturing process was introduced by the competition to take them down..
