WHAT DO THE KIDS LEARN IN SCHOOL? is a popular verse from Will Smiths version of just the two of us. it is a pity that we have so many schools in the country today, but many are without aims and objectives. many students go to school today. but ask many why they are in school, you may be suprised that less than 10% knows why they are there.
learning is meant to be the priority reason, but a lot of people will say because they want to make money and get rich. you try to misbehave in public, people will say, but you said you are educated. why are you misbehaving? if then behaviour is one of the top priority of schools, what can we then say of our own mutallab who went to some of the best schools in the world?
going to the genesis of school and learning: the time of Aristole and other Greeks philosophers down to Alexander the Great who establish the first university why they did that?
basically their motives is to know more about nature, human behaiour and the society at large.
today, we hear a lot of noise on tv, radios and newspaper that the standard of education are falling by the day. i asked what are the standards required and what are the standards we are. what are we meant to be learning and what are we been taught. nairalanders your contributions pls

materials are downloaded, read and digest . no exams, no cert. just read and digest. Is this not the aims of education, understanding things. then why must i then go to school?

Because in the modern-day era, school is now Big Business.

Universities have long since become centers of teleguided research and stereotyped academic activity, degrees are actively marketed and created as products usually are (I am looking for an EMBA program, and found one on 'Telecoms Management'), and employers and institutions are now in some sort of unholy collaboration.

The hyping of MBAs by top notch business schools in a way contributed to the global financial crisis, in my personal opinion. Inexperienced money managers, armed with these glass degrees, played all sorts of roulette with people's livelihoods, and created fictitious wealth for themselves. The result is what we are still suffering today.

As far as I am concerned, until the day education goes back to the basics of empowering people for productivity, and not all these glimmer degrees, nothing much will change about the world economy. I was reading a Bizweek interview recently about a billionaire in Brazil. He posited that the US is now behind in the world economy simply because the brightest minds were now working in investment banks, and not engineering companies.

Your writing shows why school is a necessary aspect of our lives. As for Mutallab he rode on his father's wealth- if he had succeeded by himself in getting into those topnotch schools he would not have ended up the way he was.

Yes, but that's because that is where the money is- IB. Why spend your time earning crappy pay as an engineer in which your salary peaks at around $120,000 when you can play the stakes in banking and maybe reach the million dollar mark? They should up the salary of engineers and things might change a lot. Smart people feel they are entitled more in terms of salary renumeration- and I cannot blame them for that.

The hyping of MBAs by top notch business schools in a way contributed to the global financial crisis, in my personal opinion. Inexperienced money managers, armed with these glass degrees, played all sorts of roulette with people's livelihoods, and created fictitious wealth for themselves. Actually most of the people blamed for the financial crisis are quants- mostly scientists or mathematicians who worked in investment banking and created complex loan products. Driving Americans to spend more and borrow more probably caused the financial crisis which had a ripple effect worldwide. Borrowing is never a good thing.

All in all education is a waste of time, and it should be streamlined, and the time spent in school reduced.

^^
To some extent I agree. Particularly when you say school should be streamlined and the amount of time spent should be reduced.
But on IB drawing the highest salaries, that is a distortion in itself. Imagine if only the guys who worked at Ladbrokes or Silver Sands were paid the highest. IB is getting more like gambling to me. They place bets, hypothetically speaking, on the performance of the companies that are actually doing the innovation.

IB actually draws one of  the highest salaries. IB is not always about gambling or placing bets on companies and it does have some legit aspects of it. They dont poay engineers well enough- infact all the engineers and physicist were running into IB in the early 90's and early part of this decade. As you correctly pointed, someone mentioned that all the smart people run into banking- I would too if I could. But that does not really stop innovation because not every smart person is obssessed with money and we do still have some people engineering stuff for the fun of it.

Look at the salary of Gary Cohn  grin, why spend time engineering stuff when u earn such a high salary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Cohn

Now look at a scientists take on science: http://wuphys.wustl.edu/~katz/scientist.html

What can be done? The first thing for any young person (which means anyone who does not have a permanent job in science) to do is to pursue another career. This will spare you the misery of disappointed expectations. Young Americans have generally woken up to the bad prospects and absence of a reasonable middle class career path in science and are deserting it. If you haven't yet, then join them. Leave graduate school to people from India and China, for whom the prospects at home are even worse. I have known more people whose lives have been ruined by getting a Ph.D. in physics than by drugs.

As for Cohn's salary shocked shocked shocked shocked

The scientist's posting is quite pathetic. Goes to show that over-education itself is overrated and largely a waste of time.
Worked on a project 2 years ago with a German professor of nuclear physics, now doing market segmentation for telcos.

Yeah u get paid that for kissing a.s.s and doing nothing- thats the ideal kind of life

As for a PhD/overeducation, I hope/dont think its worthless- just an oversupply of PhDs thats not meeting with demand.

moores law states that information doubles every 2 years or so. if that is the case, should that not transformed into allocation of more study time or what?,
