[quote author=GurlFriend post=50390248]Yesterday, Oba Ewuare ll N'Ogidigan ascended the revered throne of his ancestors to become the 40th Oba of Benin, succeeding his late father, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Erediauwa.

The photo below of the newly coronated Oba puzzled many people.

Why was the Oba covering his mouth? It was obviously a cultural act but what was the significance? Even his wives covered their mouths.

I did some investigation and found out the following:

The Oba usually covers his mouth because when he talks he is the supreme authority. Whatever he says is final.

People talk on his behalf most of the time and whatever they proclaim becomes the Law with immediate effect.

A friend of mine who is a painter said he did a painting of the old Oba and it was rejected because it depicted him smiling. According to tradition, people are not supposed to see the Oba's teeth so he doesn't smile.

His wives covered their mouths as a sign of submission.

Don't you just love our culture? So rich and varied!

If I have any fact wrong, please clarify.

39th oba not 40th

Africa should get rid of all these things..where was our so called tradition when the white man took us all as slaves.. These things help set us back many thousand years..that is why most of our big strides in development came when we where under our colonial masters.

We keep dwelling on tradition that adds no tangible meaning or advancement to our society at large.

Binis were never taken as slaves. It was prohibited by royal decree. And mind you, being a slave is by choice. There was never a slave who didn't choose to be a slave. The choice may be Slavery or death, but the choice exists. Oba gha to kpere

Shior! That is how u will go about brandishing other people culture. Beni has a beautiful an unrivalled culture so much so that colonial masters stole from them. Has China not maintained dia culture? Was America not colonised and still maintain themselves? What you just wrote above smirks of noecolonialism . An idea that makes u feel ur colonial masters are superior to you.

All I will say is continue and not be proud of your own

And they will not teach this in Social Studies and History classes.

They are busy packing irrelevant poo into the head of our children like telling them that Mungo Park discovered River Niger. As if the fishermen who have been fishing there before Mungo Park's grand father was born did not know that that is a river.

Are you aware the whites have not abandoned their own culture and traditions. The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth is one of the most influential personalities in the world. Not to mention prince Charles.

my problem is not tradition or culture itself.

My problem is that almost all of our traditions are not geared towards advancing our Society in any way.

All you hear are rituals, killings when they need to bury a king and all sorts..

Smh...I dunno about other kingdoms but it's on record benin kingdom was a model kingdom highly civilised & the only west/central african kingdom christened a city.

With the Europeans also baffled by its lack of crime and even used It to diss london.

So what r u saying?

Today is it tradition that has set us back? Or does the oba sign budgets? Control the security forces? sign trade agreements? Our oba rarely leaves the palace sef.

Unlike other glorified kingdoms do u see edo govnor presenting staff of office to our oba? Dem no born am well. We all saw the reaction on FB when he tried it .

It's not tradition that has set us back as a nation but greedy military men & politicians
