Pre-colonial Igboland consisted of a multitude of autonomous chiefdoms as opposed to a large centralized entity, such as the Oyo or Benin empires or the northern emirates. A fierce spirit of independence characterised these Igbo chiefdoms, hence their often detrimental refusal to co-operate for the common Igbo good (for instance, to repel the slave traders). Another way of looking at it is that they weren't really 'one people' as such, but rather, Igbo was a language that united the various peoples of the Lower Niger region. It was the colonialists and later their creation (Nigeria) which introduced 'identity politics', and thereby forced the peoples of this region to identify as a single ethnic group ''Igbos'', as opposed to what they were previously - disparate peoples who shared a common 'Igbo' language.
