Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana has advised that the $29.9bn loan request by President Muhammadu Buhari will mortgage the future of Nigeria. Falana spoke at a symposium tagged: “X-raying 50 years of military intervention in Nigeria’s politics”, organised by the Department of Political Science, University of Lagos.

Falana urged the President to forget about the loan and begin aggressive recovery of the country’s looted funds stashed away in foreign countries.

He said:

“Between 1978 and 1986, this country incurred debts to the extent that we did not know how much we owed under the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. They had to engage the services of a consultant in the West to tell us what we owed, and of course, the London Paris Club gave us a figure. That was the extent to which governance deteriorated.

“By the time [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo was paying the debts, in one fell swoop in 2005, this country parted with $12.4bn for the West to forgive our debts. Meanwhile, they were the real sinners. At that time, on both the principal and the interest, we had paid $42bn. That amount alone could have eradicated poverty in the entire Africa.

“Now again, President Buhari wants to get a loan of $30bn. You know what that means? For generations unborn, we will mortgage their future, except the money is genuinely meant for infrastructural development, which is usually not the case once the money comes in. So Buhari should forget about the $30bn loan when he can get more than that if he goes after our stolen money in the West.”

@Falana, No matter how loud you shout, that partially deaf-ENT man will not hear well.

Buhari is the only problem Nigerians have today and I feel embarrassed and harassed been in a country where an outdated man rules.

Abi no only me hear am? then why asking $29.9b again?

At first, it was selling national assets (NNPC and NLNG) for that matter and naija united in one voice and now this?

am curious, does APC and Buhari really understand what they are doing?

Buhari has failed to realise that we are in the 21th century, that nigerians nd nigeria need to be treated with sophisticated approaches.

But baba is still handling us with his analogue-like ancient style,

abeg why borrow money,u claim to ve recovered money looted by some fellows

Omisore has returned 350million na! Just like many others as well. At first selling national assets came onboard, Nigerians united with a voice even when few mofos thought it was a viable idea.... Now its 29billion dollars.

Looted funds anthem is just a farce. As day breaks intelligent nigerians will come to know what the media propaganda has done to this country. We were enjoying our lives when the media came and told us there was massive corruption and that we need to remove the clueless one and bring on mr intergrity. Now look at what mr integrity has done to the once largest economy in africa. But yet some fools still deceive themselves by saying there is a fight against corruption. I am now tempted to believe jonathan when he said the corruption mantra was simply overblown. Everybody should just accept that we have been scammed, only then we might begin to move some where

Professionals should learn to mind there profession if they dont understand how it works

Seriously u guys were happy with the China trip and all the things they promised now to rectify it as a law u now complain

Majority of this is not a loan as we know it... China and the rest will identify a project build it operate it for an agreed time frame and hand over... so we won't have an increased debt servicing. .. the others from the world bank have a grace period of 5 years and very low interest rates.. . By then our economy would have stabilised and taxing would be more effective so we should have a revenue of close to $100bn dollars per year so it wont be a problem

This is how u guys stopped Jonathan from removing subsidy then. .. Now we have ended up at the same point buying fuel and 145.. How wise is that

All the professors of economics we have it is ur petrotic responsibility to break this down for the common man. . Out news news won't even look for such people. . Instead will look for people who know nothing about economy

Am tired of this country

All the corruption cases we have how long dose it take to conclude? ? So we should wait till then?? The litigation process for recovery is very long and we canf wait till then

And mind u each found recovered will be put back were it was stolen.. So whats ur point

Buhari the only mistake Nigerians has made ,
First Mr lie told us a huge amount of money ranging in dollars was recovered that's about 100 billion $,

Then they told us England has returned our looted money, everybody was happy.

Buhari why can't you take the 30 billion $ from the 100 billion$ we've recovered so far, then we will still have 70 billion$ in reserve embarassed,
All was the recovered money giving back to the looters,

Am not understanding anymore!!!! sad,
We just need to go back to corruption era.

It will not be sufficient to do anything..most of them are caught in litigation which will take month or even years to clear up..this loan is our best bet..
I don't support loan normally ..but with buhari as our president I know he will never misappropriate our money ..

Immediate injection is needed for a near comatose economy. Hence, the loan. This can be likened to a sick person needing revival.

Papa Falz d bad guy has made very salient points here..
I really don't see the use of borrowing when we have twices that amount stashed in different bank accounts around the globe.. PMB should re enforce his corruption fight and recover as many looted cash his hands can lay on and work with that.
Borrowing will only make things worse and continue the never ending circle of debts to the west..

Nigerians, let no one deceive you. Buhari and the West want to enslave you with that loan. Once that loan is colllected in ypur name, you are enslaved forever.

The kind of lethargic reactions I am seeing at this loan request is a sign that the people are tired thry have been economically emasculated.

Economic recession in Nigeria is a lie, they will use that term to enslave you because you are ignorant, yet proud and arrogant. Cocky arrogance without foundation. An economy that is largely structureless, an economy that is powered by generators is in recession? Pray tell, when was it not in recession? Because you think you are players rather than the idiots you really are, they will do all kinds of things to you under the name of recession, una go hear am. The more you look the less you will see, and the more you concentrate the less you will understand.

Turn to God.

The people you are up against are not smiling with you. You are completely in their hands.

Only God can save you.

Now the south west are on the attack.
Anyway,He said the absolute truth!
PMB want to mortgage the future of this country and generations yet unborn.

Only non-patriotic Nigerians will side with the president.
Nigeria has all it takes to generate revenue for infrastructural development.

We don't need the loan, all we need is for the government to create a conducive and viable business environment through good policy making for private investors and entrepreneurs.

Reduce the cost of governance by slashing the salaries and allowances of political office holders especially in the executive and legislative arms of government.

Create equity in government appointments that will build trust in the government and curb divisions along political and ethnic lines.

Make exportation of commodities easy and make soft loans easily accessible.

Nigeria needs creative and innovative governance and not all these archaic style/method of government.
