My story...
I was a Class Rep for 5 years (100 - 500 level). It wasn't easy at all. So many times I wanted to give up but my classmates encouraged me. I took the heat on behalf of the class so many times. I was even threatened by a lecturer with extra year because my mates offended the man, so he said he would fail me as I was the leader of the class and he couldn't fail a whole class so as not to arouse suspicion from the school Senate. So many ups and downs but I persevered. In the five years, I was given Best class rep of the year award twice in the whole school, My HOD invited me for dinners with other lecturers of the faculty and so many other beautiful memories I have.
One other thing is if I was broke and hungry, I just called one of my female classmates say hunger dey worry me and the would invite me to their rooms to eat (I was hardly ever lacking dinner) rotate it among them. *I can't forget one of my Darling mates that made Amala and Ewedu just for me...lol.
Sometimes it was hard. Sometimes it was easy. I cried. I laughed. We fought. We made up. I learned LEADERSHIP first hand. Many people pay for professional classes what I learnt practically from leading my mates. I love them all, all through the Five beautiful years. Even after 6 years, they still call me "My CLA REP".
My advice to all class reps is that be good to the people you serve. It may look hard, you may fight or argue, in all, be good to them for future sake. You are a leader, Lead! Make decisions. That's what they want you to do. I was not the most brilliant student in class. I was average but I had mates who were always willing to help me study and pull through. We graduated together in Bliss and we still help each other even after we all departed the institution.

Am yet to get to university. But I have spent all my primary and secondary school years as a leader. From being a class Rep, to being the senior prefect, to being the fcs president. It's not easy.

not knowing that day was the final selection day by the course adviser. on stepping into the class, the adviser ask me if am a student of the class and I replied yes before I know what was happening three of the student said lets nominate him although I saw five student facing the board not knowing they are voting already, then all other student claim to be in support even with that I don't know whats happening.

the adviser told me to face the board but all the student rejected the idea insisting they all want me so he have no option than to approve it and ask others to go back to their seat. so he asked, do you know you are now the course monitor and y are u just resuming? then I replied him I don't want the post and I have no excuse for resuming late............... to cut the story short I rejected it and the class oppose me on that and we all resulted that i should be the interim monitor but anytime we want to vote they still choose me which mk me remain the interim again and again for a yr before I later take it serious and remain the monitor till we graduate.

you're right, i experienced all these during my undergraduate days.

it's far better to lead a sheep than human beings

Even though not all class reps experience all these I've listed, while some class reps could really be mean, nasty and proud, abeg its not all rosy for the guy. We pass through a lot actually. I hope I was really able to achieve the main aim of this post which is: Giving you (a bit of) an insight into the actual life of a typical class rep. So the next time you see your class rep, show some reverence. To some extent, they deserve it because the truth of the matter is, ITS NOT EASY!

let me share a bit of my Experience here too.

As a class rep, there are some undeserved favors I get for free, while others are lobbying for recognition, I'll just walk directly to the person I needed to see.

the scandal that rocked my leadership experience was the one of mis-management of funds, I was scammed of almost 10k when I was sent to purchase cameras for photography class..I can never forget the experience.
Alot of my classmates trusted me that I would never steal the class money, some believed I actually spent the money, I was taken to the school authority, faced the school security body and Hod, but at last I was made to refund the money.

During that period, I almost cried my eyes out and almost dropped the post, but when the issue was over, I am just grateful for the experience, I learnt the HARDWAY.

There are many good experiences to talk about,

But, let me drop my pen here.

you are actually right @OP, I was the Class Rep & it was a painful pleasure, from my 100L-200L, it was a hell to me. we were 94 in number. I started enjoying my Class Rep work from second semester till our graduation. I defended all my classmates, I never allowed anyone to have any missing scripts, I always advocate for my classmates, I do send SMS to all of them if the need arises from my personal money, I did assignments to many & all the group assignment was on my head. I do group them for tutorials and the worst was the carryover students. in fact, I was working as a teacher in a secondary school which made to b missing all my electives. the summary is thus, 98% of my classmates so much loved me because I saw their problems as mine and I even influenced lecturers to pass them.

my worst experience was that I'm fair, tall, gentle, handsome and above all, I'm intelligent. so ladies nearly tear me apart and they fought each other. I never dated any girl in the campus because I needed a good name, guys were always jealous of me.

good of all was that my class believed in anything that came out from my mouth because I was so sincere and diligent, I was crazily influential to both lecturers and students. I never bought food with my money because few of my classmates always supply me with food stuffs and money. my classmates loved me as their gods.

above all, I graduated with 2.1..... I Rep Rehabilitation Science 2016 set, University of Jos.... just ask anybody of Charlieboy or Charles...

Being a class rep wasn't easy but on the long run it pays. There are many advantages and disadvantages but your lecturers will always listen to you and respect you. Your coursemate will hate you envy you but at the end you are still the boss. And your mates will never forget you

I was the class rep in my final year..... I can relate all this.... I was an introvert n a shy person before I was given the position by the class.... but as we graduated... I look back and I noticed I wasn't really an introvert as compared to how I was before.... because I can now stand crowd and no too much stage fright

i can relate to all of the above points. Being class rep from year one to finals really made me a better person sha....i received lots of things...love, threats, insults, rejections, abuses, support, care...just name it but Jah made those years my purging period.

I have heard tales of being a class rep from my senior bro,abt hw you would be hated by your mates,how you would be held responsible for any misconduct by your course mates e.g if questions get leaked,how you wuld be knwn by alot of lecturers and you wuld become an erand boy e.t.c..but even with dis,i still gat this undying love to be one Cus i had experienced most of this things as a class captain and prefect in pry nd sec xkul...though i know itx a different game entirely in the university..

I just finished as the Class Rep for the graduated class of 2017 of Unilorin, Faculty of Engineering. Bro, It wasn't an easy task. though I wasn't the class rep from day one coz I joined the class in 200 level through direct entry. So, in my 300 level days I moved closer to the rep and became very close to the extent of earning people trust and always fight for them so I was appointed the assistant class rep and the same time the rep n I were serving concurrently at the faculty level as an excos. we make sure our dept get the best of the best so we were there for them always. in our 400level days we supported the rep to become our faculty president and we succeeded in getting him there. some people move a motion to appoint me the class rep though they know that I'll still work with the faculty president cox of our closeness. I took up the post without stress cox they all trusted me and I still took up some appointment at the faculty level from the president being a friend. I appointed my departmental crush as my assistant.

Lesson: To be a leader, try all ur possible best to earn ur people trust and try to be transparent to them in all situation.
NB: I don't deal with the issue of money, I appointed neutral person from the class to handle that cox money is my weak point.

Good day nairalanders. I presume you're enjoying your weekend. Sorry for the long silence though, have not been able to make any posts for this long. Been preoccupied with some sh!t ni.
Finally tho', today, I decided to flex my writing skills and I came up with this one. Its not a meme post as usual o. Lol. I'll title it "THE DIARY OF A CLASS REP". It depicts the life as a typical class rep in a Nigerian higher institution of learning.

Majority of us here on nairaland I'm sure, are currently in, or have passed through Tertiary institutions here in Nigeria. So I'm positive you're not ignorant of the fact that there used to be that one guy (and in some rare cases, a lady) called CLASS REP. I being one myself, sought to write this post as an attempt to atleast give you an insight to how life is, as a class rep. What is it all about? You'll find out.

And.... if you're a class rep also and reading this, (bro see my hand), weldone! Gbààyì! Your actual reward is in heaven. Not whatever change they may be giving you (that's even if you're been given any). You actually deserve more. This post was meant to serve more or less of a guide to you.

Enough of the talking, read on:


1. You'll have to contend with those people who don't like you.
Of course for you to be at the leading position and head of class, there sure must be a number of your class members who won't like you for one reason or the other. While some would naturally dislike you for no particular reason, others because they wish to be in your position. So expect to meet stiff opposition. They might not want to challenge you openly or directly, but there's that attitude they'll always exhibit. And if you're smart enough, you should be able to deduce and manage them accordingly.

2. You must have an answer to every question.
As the leader, of course its one of your inbound duties to always be there to provide answers and solutions to whatever issues that may arise which concerns the class generally. All though, this can be really difficult especially when you're dealing with a class with a high population. The higher the number of people in class, the bigger your responsibility.

3. ...And you must learn to tolerate the stupid questions too
In as much as its your responsibility to have the right answers to questions, some class members go out of context most atimes by asking stupid or unnecessary questions. This makes the work even more difficult for the Class Rep. They'll throw questions at you like: "Class rep, abeg when school dey vacate?" (when the school calendar is boldy pasted on notice boards or available on the school website), or "Class rep, exam go still start next week shey?" (If the timetable has been adjusted, wouldn't you have heard about it?).. Worse still, some would want to ask the really annoying questions like: "Class Rep, who be your babe na?" (Guy.. Whyyyyyyy? ). As annoying as it could get, some of your class members would call you as early as 5am, disturbing your sweet sleep, just to ask whether the lecture at 10am that morning would still hold (na this one dey pain me pass). For God's sake how class rep wan take know? Abi class rep don dey see future ni?

4. You're so many persons in one.
Yes, you're the class rep. But at the same time, you're somebody's boyfriend. You're somebody's brother, somebody's bestfriend and all that. Some lecturers would even turn you to an errand boy. You're also a politician by disposition... You just have to learn and adapt well to living as so many persons in one. The down side of this aspect is that, all these responsibilities could be really detrimental to your studies in the long run. Because being a man of many parts, you'd rarely find spare time to study except perhaps deep in the night which is time meant for rest and sleep. If you attempt to do it during the day, concentrating tends to become a challenge, alongside the distractions and many phone calls

I became the class rep in a very easy way but after about 1month I was faced with some political tursle for my position so many allegations came up, that was during december 2016. So later there was the issue of election as I was not elected in the first place. As the allegations came I did not counter any of the allegations rather I waited till we all went home for the christmas break. Then on the first day of January 2017, I wrote an appologetic letter on our class whatsapp group telling them the challenges I've been facing and how the lecturers has been frustrating me.
When they woke up and saw my post a serious debate started almost immediately but then I have explained things to them and about 80 percent of them have taken a stand with me as we resumed after the break I used diplomacy to win the rest I could but then the issue has reached the HOD and he has mandates my Departmental presido and the excos to conduct an election for my class. Those against me where already using the 200level students to campagn against me but in all these the greatest tool I used was patient and God was with me because even the people I trusted was against me. On the day of the election I had five challengers but before the election started four withdrew from the election at the end I won convinsingly . We were about 105 in class but on that day about 40 students came for the election and I got 32 votes against my opponents 8votes.
