The voice and the will of the students, daily is
crippled in fear,the student's have been coerced
into submition,we have more Cowards than we
have of Comrades, men and women who are
driven merely by the desire to fatten their
pocket, hypocrites, praise singers," plate
washers just for the goodwill of the authority "
and most importantly infants, the situation is
sad!
Many are hurting in this school, they do not
know how to go about it, the fear of suspension
or the Anti-cult is now the order of the day,
daily UNIZIK shuns out soft minded men and
women who are bereft of the moral courage to
make any real impact in their society! Our
democracy suffers a terrible assault, sadly
enough it is fostered in our own citadel of
learning! Our Student Leaders and
representatives have failed us!
Not so long ago, the student's dis-satisfied with
the state of things in the school, sought to
change the government and elect new persons,
the campaign started in earnest, and I
Ekwegbalu Nnamdi, equally joined in this
movement, I sought the student's mandate to
represent them as the Student Union President,
did my best to arouse in them a desire to work
towards the reinvigoration of the Union.Little did
we know that some student's already has struck
a deal with the school authority for a second
tenure, of a borrowed mandate.Consequently the
authorities conveniently scrapped this periodic
change of government and retained an inactive
Vice-President turned President, then threatened
to replace the Student Union Government with a
care-taker committee, then called on all Student
Union Government Executives to relinquish their
positions, except the said President,this
continued, the Faculty President's were
summoned to a meeting that
the host never showed up.
The situation continued,we the aspirants sought
redress but non was given, we realised that we
were completely hitting our heads against a
brick wall.The first thought,that would have
come to your mind is "why not demonstrate?"
Demonstration is a democratic tool,here in
UNIZIK we run an autocratic system, where the
right and will of the student's can only be
expressed at the convenience of the
authorities.Also need I remind you, of Nobel
Eyisi our Former Union Leader I might not have
agreed with the tactics he engaged in pursuant
of his objectives,however the demonstration he
staged was conveniently nipped in the bud, and
he too, with his colleagues were conveniently
also rusticated from the University, with no
recourse to the students!
Noble has sought all manner of relieve and non
was granted, that in it's self is enough to
demoralized any person who would ever desire
to say a word.Even my fellow students do not
even understand what transpired,
all they know is that "Big Brother is watching"
and that the school reserves a right to rusticate
you without any recourse to anybody, for they
are above the law, and a student has no rigt to
be protected from them.How else will you
explain the fact that the authorities did not even
deem it fit to explain to the students even for
one day why they rusticated her Student Leader.
There is no Democracy here! My write-up here I
know is enough to put me at risk also, but I do
not care, for I know like Martin Luther King Jnr
has rightly said “A nation or civilization that
continues to produce soft- minded men
purchases its own spiritual death on the
installment plan.” and also that the only thing
necessary for the triumph of evil is for good
men to do nothing!
