Court To Hear George's Bail Application Nov 9

THE Lagos High Court, Ikeja has fixed Monday, November 9 for hearing in the bail application filed by jailed former National Deputy Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George and five others. A former chairman, Board of Directors, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), George was jailed earlier in the week by Justice Olubunmi along with five others on the board.

They were jailed over abuse of contract awards as well as abuse of power during their tenure (2001-2003).

Their counsel, led by Mr. Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN) and Dele Adesina (SAN) had filed notice of appeal and bail pending the determination of the appeal on Wednesday, October 28, and in response to their applications, Justice Oyewole yesterday fixed November 9, for hearing of the application.

George, according to a sworn- affidavit presented to the courts is seeking bail on health grounds alleging "hypertension with arthritis."

The former PDP chieftain, along with Aminu Dabo, Captain Olusegun Abidoye, Alhaji Abdullahi Aminu Tafida, Alhaji Zanna Maidaribe and Alhaji Sule Aliyu are currently serving a two-year jail term each at the Kirikiri Maximum prison.

The convicts had filed the applications, "motion on notice" dated October 28 for accelerated hearing of the matter, "brought pursuant to section 10 and 51 of the High Court of Lagos State Law 2003 and under the inherent jurisdiction of this honorable court."

Ayanlaja and Adesina claimed they have served the respondent, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

Counsel to EFCC, Mr. Festus Keyamo, admitted receiving the applications. He demanded three days each to respond to the six applications but was overruled by the court.

Explaining his position, Keyamo said he got George's application on Wednesday and the last filing on Thursday night, requesting for time to respond.

Ayanlaja appealed for Keyamo's understanding, while Adesina said it was possible for Keyamo to operate on Saturday and Sunday to quicken his response to all the applications.

Justice Oyewole urged all the parties to exchange all necessary documents within a week.

He should rot inside jail. He had hypertension with Arthritis when he was stealling public fund so he should bear them to jail. No mercy for a heartless criminal like him who think he can enrich his pocket at the expense of Nigerians suffering. After all many prisoners have worst sickness than his, if tested yet still serving their jail terms

He has not seen anything yet.

Knowing Naija and the way things go (and the money he's got to spend) he might be able to wangle his way out of this one. . . but make e use at least 1yr first.

He should be allowed to go and treat himself, health is important than whatever, unless if Nigeria want him to die in that prison.

Let him die there and transcend into eternal damnation.Loads of innocent nigerians die in prisons and  police cells day in day out awaiting trials.They die from malnutrition,police bullets,cramps,heat waves,stampedes and diseases of sorts in what we call detention or rehabilitation centres,yet,nobody talks about it.

why are they always sick after a judgement?

Bode George should be made to face the consequence of his action squarely. No excuse should be allowed - health or whatever

All this are excuses, if they even give me the hospital information about this, i still would not believe and i don't see the reason why we all here don't understand that this Man is rich with the stolen money and want to get out of prison, wow the power of money really suck because so many Nigerian's are in that prison dieing.anyway F**k BG.

I will definately forward to my brother (identity witheld) different opinions and suggestions here on nairaland, to make sure adequate,strigent and maximum security is put around him (George) to prevent any unforseen case of prison break. I am saying this 'cos I know anything can happen in Nigeria.

if he has high bp and arthritis only, then he is among the healthy nigerians. his criminal activities in nigeria has caused deaths, untold hardships and a lot of illnesses to millions of nigerians. chief morris ibekwe(okwelle holdings) was not only an accused under ribadu and obj and was not allowed medical treatment while he was sick hence he died. if anyone plans to allow bode goerge for any reason outside death, we will see the hands of selected justice back here.
to you bode george, we are praying that God will make available to you more life treathening sicknesses like TB, HIV, hypertitis and other big issues for you have murdered sleep and deserve no sleep.

Time to pay for his crime, he suddenly remembers he has "hypertension with arthritis." When he was chasing women all arround Lagos; throwing his ill gotten wealth on them; marrying several wives at his age; etc, he did not remember he had "hypertension with arthritis."

Hope the judges won't grant him his request. If they do then i think Yar Adua should be asked to resign on Health grounds since his to not medically stable to administer the affairs of the country. He is just using the nation's money to take care of himself all for free when a common man on the street dies because he and his family member could not raise money to pay for hospital bills.

Funny how these guys always bring up health issues when they end up in jail,
