The French conservatives voted in a nationwide primary to choose their nominee for next year’s presidential election, after a campaign marked by concerns about immigration and Islamic extremism. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was among the contestants for the primary election. The former leader was denied a second tenure after he after he lost to Socialist Francois Hollande in 2012 to become a one-term president. And so Nicolas Sarkozy dream of a comeback was put to a stop.

The former president Nicolas Sarkozy, known for his high taste for his high life conceded defeat in the race to choose the conservative nominee for next year’s presidential election. Ex-prime ministers Francois Fillon and Alain Juppe had both outpolled Sarkozy in the early returns, and will now advance to the Nov. 27 runoff.

In a speech from his campaign headquarters in Paris on Sunday, Sarkozy called on his supporters to vote for Fillon in the second round. “I have no bitterness, I have no sadness, and I wish the best for my country,” Sarkozy said in a dignified concession speech.

More than 3.2 million votes were counted out of an estimated total of 5 million. Fillon had 44 percent votes, Juppe 28.1 and Sarkozy 21.1. Fillon is seen as a influential figure with strong boost in popularity compared to Sarkozy.
His defeat is seen as a non acceptance of the country’s most divisive figures. The 61-year-old who is married to former top model Carla Bruni tried to woo voters to his side. But the former leader known in France as “Sarko” was humiliated in the party’s first ever primary, coming third behind the man who served as his prime minister, Francois Fillon, and another ex-premier, Alain Juppe. The French conservatives voted in a nationwide primary to choose their nominee for next year’s presidential election, after a campaign marked by concerns about immigration and Islamic extremism.
