Seeing the above title may have made you pause for a second, contemplate on its appropriateness, and wonder whether the author was out of his mind. I thought same, too when this dimension of the timeless Christian faith resonated in my mind, yearning for an opportunity to surface. The topic's weirdness embodies its beauty, as it brings compatibility of folly and a Christian to the fore. Your reading journey now may seem long but completion would make it worthwhile.

Over the years, Christianity has been interpreted in many ways that rightly often converge at the person of our Lord Christ Jesus, thus acknowledging Him as the faith's author and finisher. Consequently, its adherents have come to be known as Christians which literally means "like Christ." This has formed crux of the definition of a Christian. The way of life encouraged by Christianity contains an attribute almost everyone dreads and do not hesitate to display their true colour whenever they are placed side by side with it either through words or action. Historically, the rejected stone just has a way of becoming the cornerstone. An enigma, indeed.

Permit me to burst your bubble; a Christian is a person "foolish" before men and wise before God. God's ways are usually termed foolishness. This has endured to this day. The lifestyle of a Christian exudes foolishness, which is seen as a weakness, that frequently warrants a lot of people to engage in personal and interpersonal debates on his/her sanity. He/she acts in contrast to the popular, trendy modes that contradicts his/her belief. As strange as it may seem, foolishness is a thread running through Christianity's fabric. God's principles and commands were considered foolish in the days of Noah. Yet, Noah's foolishness preserved his lovely family and himself during the flood.

Most notably, foolishness enabled salvation through Christ Jesus. He was ridiculed as the self-acclaimed Messiah and Son of God who was about to die and couldn't save himself, unknown to them He was saving mankind forever. The whole scenario suggested He was goofing off, but yet it was laden with great wisdom; one that has given privilege of being saved to whoever that calls on His name. If you're yet to do so, you can now. Considering Christ Jesus, Our Lord God, lived a life that was riddled with foolishness in the opinion of men and yet was simultaneously applauded by Heaven, it follows Christians should follow that trail since it is our essence to be like Him. In this way, a simpleton would connote a sage. For the more foolish you are, the wiser and more Christian you get (see 1 Corinthians 3:18).

Thus, rejecting a bribe, desisting from self-gratification and pre-marital cum extra-marital sex, distancing oneself from impersonation and falsification, evangelizing, observing quiet time, praying ceaselessly, discouraging embezzlement and covetousness, condemning same-sex marriage, frowning at provocative dressing, giving to the needy, etcetera, seem foolish and "jewish" to most people but to God Almighty, you're the man/woman of the moment. A Christian with a capital "C."

Finally, Apostle Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians acknowledged he was a "fool" and "weak," an encomium some of them poured on him despite his exploits. However, he went on to express a reply God gave him on a certain occasion concerning his precarious situation, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." This statement by our Lord God, I believe, erases any doubt you may have had at the beginning about the suitability of this writing. The potency of God's power comes alive in a life being lived "foolishly." So, are you a "fool?" God cannot use you if you're not foolish, weak and humble, for these imply submission to His ways. That's the irony of Christianity.

You don't mean it, So foolishness is now a Christian virtue?

Haba!

The whole Bible resonates with calls to wisdom, get it, tie it around your neck, bind it to your heart, study to show one'self approved, etc, yet someone is redefining foolishness to mean wisdom.

This is playing the victim card, if you are a Christian and fool don't turn it into a virtue for even the Bible says that God has no pleasure in fools.

Dear friend, we are saying the same thing. This wisdom you talked about is perceived as so before God but yet it is usually reckoned as foolishness and weakness by men. That is the angle I'm coming from. Apostle Paul confirmed this in 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, when he referred to foolishness and the weakness that comes with it as a strength. if you go through that piece of writing again, you would see that I anticipated your reaction and did justice to it.

As in, you anticipated it by playing the victim card?

Forget that thing, Kings don't dine with "clay plates," neither would God, let's rid ourselves of folly and and let the wisdom of God continue from where our human wisdom ends.

I don't subscribe to the notion that God takes pleasure dealing with idiots, because even in human affairs idiots are not the preferred candidates.

It's either you or the OP doesn't understand the matrix of God, to assume that folly in whatever disguise "trumps" wisdom, which is the hallmark of God.

... WISDOM is the principal thing...
... In all thy getting get understanding (wisdom)...

Those are cardinal words carved in marble.

We know your type. grin

You'd rather Christianity is adorned in royal apparels and be appealing to men.

You want to be accepted by God and men. Not knowing that's the hallmark of tares.

And we wonder why there is no power in our "today Christianity"

This article serves on the table of people's minds a fresh perspective about the Christian faith, and crystallizes a link between being Christian and foolish. It demonstrates the wisdom resident in Christ-like ways of life adjudged by critics as "foolish" and argues that Christians needn't be ashamed when labeled such.

Thus, the work's relevance lies in the unconventional way it perceives the age-old faith. It will interest Nairalanders, including non-Christians whose understanding of Christianity stand to be deepened. Kindly move the post to front page. Thank you.
