Most of u commenting dont get it. What i can see is that some of these foreign telcos are at great loss when they try to repatriate their profits due to the bad exchange rate. So they want the NCC to set a benchmark data plan that no telco can go below. I.e. glo or mtn cant go below 1.5 gig @ 2,500 naira!! However they can go above it.
Has anyone heard glo complaining about this? No. They dont need to tepartriate their profits. They can readily reinvest in naira. And dont forget say na glo de scatter data price anyhow.

which foreign telcos, when u do surveys, u wil find out dat ppl use more of mtn, etisalat and airtel more than glo. Glo service outsyd lag, abj and ph is bad, telcos company crying are d ones own by our so called leaders, companies like smile, spectranet, ntel etc. We are satisfied with status quo, anybody that cant compete whether foreign or local can go

If we can all agree not to buy data and hesitate to use data for 2 weeks, these extortionists will know that consumers are their paymasters. I don't blame them, NCC sold us out.

If you know that amount of money MTN stack to South Africa annually.... You feel sorry for Nigerians and wicked leaders that get commission from it... Govt tax them heavily and masses bears the brunt.. While those pot bellied men felt indifferent for the plight of the masses ....Nigetians when are going to be wise... If we can't fight together due to religious and tribal differences they are playing us with, I think is high time we go our separate ways

The subscribers who can access all the networks in their area won't feel a pinch of this poor network. If one network isn't good they can easily port to other networks.

But in my case, only MTN is conveniently good for browsing in my area, other networks are there, but they are terribly slow. And this is MTN that's #1 in showing manipulative tendency to end users, I'm really worried by this threat!

I've envisaged this coming due to continuous rise in prices of goods and services, they too want to hike their data price to cover for the increasing cost of living in the country, how many Nigerians make calls these days?

The Nairaland kids they were mocking Buhari when the president was using DSS to chase unscrupulous Bureau de Change operators, you can see the shame is on you now.

Every fight against corruption is a fight for the common man on the street. I even heard one useless element on this forum saying it's not his money that was stolen by the last administration, and this animal will still come on here to complain of no electricity, jobs, and other infrastructures.

I just hope the network providers would consider we that are using the data for legitimate online businesses, not coming on Nairaland to curse the government and fuel ethnic division.

Who forced these Telcos to slash their data prices in the first place? Did they not keep unveiling new data plans and prices to attract market share? Did anyone force them to give out all the freebies they did? If they felt d prices were unrealistic, healthy business plans would have seen them offer better services for slightly increased prices on their own network, not banding together with the connivance of the NCC to unilaterally increase prices by as much as 200%!

That is bad faith and large scale monopoly which should not be the case. There is supposed to be competitive marketing and prices based on quality of services rendered. How effective have their data services been anyway?

Exactly my thoughts.

Don't worry, fuel price hike will come next year ,they have already sounded out the warning twice

its so funny the way you keep supporting the hike in price of goods and services even when its economically unreasonable just because you do not like the face of the man in the villa. I know how dissappointed you are that the planned hike in data prices did not go on as expected and you are here even supporting the poor data services expected.

Something is definitely wrong with us as Nigerians, wish ourselves failure just because our brother is not the one in charge, very petty of us.

Sit down there and keep consoling urself ,I am a realist and I don't believe in sentiments or emotions ,I look at issues realistically and tell the truth. What is my business with buhari or bubu, that is a complete mundane excuse for governance stupidity. When ppl warn ,u say they don't like buhari, whereas it is the truth. How can a government that cant pay its present workforce salaries say it will employ additional 300,000 and u think that sustainable?even right now as we speak it is costing importers almost 500N to send money abroad for goods witout adding clearing fees and other charges ,common sense only needs to be applied for one to know that goods will cost more in January, the facts are there but when one says these things ur brain automatically tune to pdp/apc arguments.don't worry enjoy ur change

Competition made the price drop down....they should leave the competition to play out. I don't think as it is now, any new entrant will want to enter. Instead of milking us dry, new entrants should be attracted with tax relieves.

The upward review is understandable as it will help discourage monopolistic tendencies later on. At the same time, I think the competition is here to stay.

It is more complicated than that. What new entrant wants to enter Cement business today that Dangote, Ibeto & WAPCO won't stiffle out? Tax incentives cannot even help because these big players can crash prices below cost price and recoup the difference in cross-selling products. New entrants will simply fizzle out

I appreciate the pulse of the end consumers like you and I. I also think we need to spare some thoughts to let the Telecoms industry develop on the long run and be sustainable. For example, CDMA (Multilinks, Starcoms etc) is virtually dead because the big GSM player and Cable coys overrun them. The new entrants that will continue to make the cut will be the global organisations like Visaphone, Virgin Mobile and co. Now this will be value erosion to Nigeria as all the monies will be "exported" to their country of origin, like MTN still does.

We need to spare some tots to allow & encourage coys of Nigerian origin to play in this market. That is how we can grow sustainably

Whoever feels going the lane of poor service delivery will perturb Nigerians should think again. What will hit them eh can only be imagined because they will witness among other things mass exodus of their subscribers.

Data service is crashing across the globe and there is no reason ours should be going up when it's not like we have the cheapest available.

Rubbish Association. Abeg make we hear word.

Don't mind the idiots.Wise guys like us read BTW the lines. In order to attract customers the telcos engaged in the data price war and shot themselves in the foot.To maintain or increase their profits given the present economic situation they ran to NCC to mandate the increase of data prices across board so that each telco would retain their customers (because if they independently increase their data price consumers will run to the telco offering the cheaper price). To show you how the regulatory agencies and industry players have always connived to dupe the masses, NCC agreed to be the bad guy.
Now they come out with the real story which reveals that it was the Telcos that initiated the move originally. They are now threatening us with poor data services. Well we the consumers have the right to port to any carrier offering better services.

How on earth can a responsible service provider threaten his paying customer with poor services? So, if they provide poor data services, we port to another network. Who is the loser then? If all networks shut down their data, other players will see the void and enter the market. In this era of extremely cheap metred data and free wifi in developed countries, they are threatening us here with poor network and exorbitant prices.

These people think they are doing us a favour by providing us with paid data. They do not understand that this is how they eat. Please somebody should tell them.

1. These are not service providers per say. These are stakeholders in the business
2. The concern is that the number of players in the industry will shrink as new entrants are frozen out. What will happen is that all of us will be restricted to probably 3-4 players. At that rate you have limited options even when they combine to rape us
3. I think in the long run, the government will need to come in and stimulate this industry. The government may need to bring like 6 investors of Nigerian origin an partner with them to float about 3 major Telcoms coy, run it for about 5-7yrs then the govt can exit their investment at a loss. That is an option to help, else someone still has to pay the price

Just because Mr Gbenga Adebayo's telecom business cannot compete with the likes of MTN, GLO, ETISALAT, AIRTEL etc doesn't mean he should use his position to propose an unnecessary data hike in a country whoz citizens are already facing untold hardship...Mr ALTON chairman or wateva u call yourself pls go and expand/invest more in ur telecom business and leave nigerians to enjoy their data!

I really don't blame this organizations. In other countries with better Internet services, prices are relatively cheap.

If you can't stand the competition put up your company for sale, make some money n delve into another that's less competitive.

Thank God I moved my data subscription from MTN to Etisalat(worst decision) now Glo. It's been a smooth ride with Glo, cheap data and reasonable speed.

market forces at the end of the day determines price of goods and services, if a businessman can't cope with a particular line of business, its better he closes down and gets into another business line and let others who can cope enter or continue that line of business, after all the erisco guy closed down his factory and said he too wants to import instead, abi he no consider the money he too will send abroad for business or clearing fees? How do you justify the astronomical increase in price of goods and services that has nothing to do with dollar rate? Does it make any economic sense? The business model of many of our fellow Nigerians are wrong, we complain, yet the Asians in our country keep thriving even in the midst of recession and creating many business outfits.

What do u expect from such Chairman, Engr Gbenga Adebayo who owns CNSSL CCL: The company he managed poorly until MTN withdrew their Callcenter contract from his company.

That man discharged CCRs without paying their entitlements: Leave allowance and Pension.

The man is also guilty of tax evasion.

Expect worse from an organisation like ALTON in as much as it is led by this man.

Ordinarily if it were to be in a developed country this man should be behind bars.
how did an ediot like him get to NCC.... No wonder..this is one of the reasons aisha buhari waz screaming then.... This gbenga is an Ediot...
