A well respected and popular lawyer was representing a rail company in a lawsuit filed by an old animal farmer. His most costly cow was missing from the section through which the rail company just built a new rail road. The farmer only wanted to be paid the fair value of his cow.
The case was scheduled to be heard in two weeks time.

The attorney for the rail company immediately cornered the old farmer and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the old farmer agreed to take half of what he was asking.

After the old farmer had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist boasting a little bit over his success, telling the old farmer, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I played a fast one on you there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the cabin-car when the train went through that section of your farm that morning. I didn't have one witness to put on the stand. I fooled you!"

The old farmer replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young man, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that stupid cow just came home this morning."

Don't ask me the look on the face of the lawyer or his reaction ooo, i was not there.
