A retiree of a milk producing company in Lagos, Roy Davies, 54, has comitted suicide two days after a treatment on his left eye went awry, reports Punchng.

Davies, who lived on Oyegbemi Street, Amukoko, Lagos State, reportedly took substance suspected to be Sniper – an insecticide – in the early hours of Saturday. .

Davies had gone for an eye treatment at a centre on Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, on Thursday. After the treatment, he could not reportedly see with the eye again. He was said to have been discharged from the centre on Friday.

The deceased’s only child, Nancy, a 22-year-old primary school teacher, stated that her father complained of pains and loss of vision when she called him on Thursday to know his condition.

Nancy said she was shocked when Davies told her it would take months before he could regain his vision. She said, “He said a bandage was put on his left eye after the treatment and that the doctor told him it would take six months before he could see properly. .

He said he was in pains and needed my prayer. I prayed for him. While I was washing clothes on Saturday, my husband approached me and said, ‘The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.’ I asked him to tell me what happened. He said my father had killed himself.”

She said her father’s death might not be unconnected with the complication arising from the eye treatment, adding that her father did not lack funds.

We shouldn't jump to the conclusion of quackery. Healthcare Professionals wouldn't need you to sign consent forms if everything was guaranteed. Wouldn't do any harm looking into the case though

The poor man was depressed and committed suicide and that had no bearing to assumed botch job on his eyes . Surely the loss of vision IN ONE EYE was temporary as per the story and he was expected to recover. It is common after any surgery to have dressings applied and eye surgery not left out.
Middle aged men are more likely to be depressed and commit suicide far more than women and family members should be observant to detect this persistently sad mood early. It is worse if they live alone or recently out of work for whatever reasons. Hospital/ health care workers' contact with people are brief and might not readily expose deeper emotional tumoil.
Middle aged persons do not reach a decision to take their lives readily or impulsively as younger people do and the man most likely had been thinking about it for weeks/months.
May the Lord grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss, amen.

what else could he have been depressed about, if not the vision loss and the pain he was suffering? he couldn't have been depressed about money, as money wasn't a problem for him.

he went for treatment in his left eye but the treatment went awry, causing the vision loss. he could not see with the eye and he was in pain yet the incompetent doctor/s discharged him. they damaged his eye, told him that somehow he would regain his vision in six months (I can tell you right now that this would not happen because it's very likely that they ruined the eye). vision loss and pain are a big deal and the man didn't how to cope. may his soul rest in peace.

If what you allude to is correct, then almost ALL patients recently discharged from the hospital will be committing suicide and some!
By the way , there were no eye witness to this ordeal even the daughter did not count it important enough to visit the Dad after the treatment neither is there information about the initial medical condition under treatment.
There are many gaps in this story and to label his doctors imconpetent is naive . There are blind people ALL over the world unfortunately, and some eye problems are irreversible and some do get well with time. Simple cattaract removal as it is, you are not expected to see well immediately after the surgery.

if everyone going to the hospital for treatment leaves with whatever was supposed to be treated being damaged and leaves in pain, they'll be highly depressed. it might not lead to suicide immediately but major depression will occur, which might end up leading to suicide. I know one guy who went for eye surgery this summer. long story short he went for eye surgery in the U.S. he was released with no discomfort in the eye and no bandaid on the eye either. he went back for treatment a few more times and within a month the full vision on the eye was restored. that's how it's supposed to be. I called the doctor/s who treated the man in the op incompetent because not only did they damage his eye that they were supposed to treat, they discharged him when he was clearly in pain likely due to the damage they had caused. they sent the man home like that and told him his vision would somehow, magically be restored in six months, which is false. eye problems will only get worse, if not properly treated, and worse, might affect the other eye as well.

I remember when I had surgery on my eye. I could only see blur for months. In fact I didn't see a thing 48hrs after. Every time I went for check up, I would be asked to read through pin hole and the doctors would tell me all will be well.

I use glasses to augment but I didn't give up. I was even nursing the idea of an eye patch.

Never give up
