In the U.S. and in Lagos, I have noticed that Nigerian women chew gum with a fierceness that is quite noticeable. Now many people eat chewing gum, but I and many other AA men and women noticed that it's nearly impossible to encounter a naija woman that is not chewing gum. And if she is dressed very nicely (which naija women usually do) they chew EVEN HARDER or more dramatically - and with attitude. What's this about? is there some official or un-official culturally linked reason for this? |

Lol, I've noticed that too, but its not just Nigerian women, many African women do it and they make this pooping sound with it. I cant stand it and always shoot them a cold stare. I think they just go into their own zone with it, I find it usually the older women though. |

@newakata If African woman chews the gum the African style, you shun it with attitude. If African woman wears weaves and ton of makeup like Europeans, you criticize it audaciously. I am of the opinion that you are very confused person and have a troubling psychic about your surroundings. |

@Dede1: PLEASE Highlight and QUOTE where I have criticized African women for gum chewing, abeg. I simply said I noticed the intensity in which it is done and I wanted to know if there were some cultural link to it. for instance, in America some people chew tobacco. Some people chew on stick (which in some cultures is equivolent to flossing). Dang, I can't ever ask a stinking question without everybody feeling like I am attacking. Yet - 95% of the threads here are BY Nigerians, trying to kick up some OBVIOUS tribalism, or sterotype or discrimination one way or another and just because I am Akata, MY QUESTIONS ARE NEVER ANSWERED, THEY ARE ONLY ATTACKED!!  Then if I were to say that from my experience here, I notice partiality against me, Several People will no doubt claim that i am just trying to start some wahala. People are too busy being defensive to even see the true meaning and intent behind most of my posts. Londoner said she noticed the SAME THING about the gum chewing, but she MAGICALLY gets a pardon- but not me! I will ask the same and similar questions using a Nigerian-like screenname and no red flags arise about my questions. |

@Newakata I am a Naija woman and HATE chewing gum. My mom hates chewing gum and my female members of family do NOT chew gum fiercely. So my question to you is, what's up with the generalizations? Do you know how many Naija women they are in this world? Have you met each and everyone one of them? Can you really identify each Naija woman out there based solely on looks since Naija women come in all different complexions/features and have Naija and/or foreign accents? I hate people like you who generalize. You don't even have the common decency to use the term "some", "alot", "most". You just generalize! How will you like it if I opened a thread and asked the question "why are black americans bastards?" considering that many of you are products of parents who never married each other before bringing you folks into this world Abeg, no vex me! @Nwaka: I did state that it is "nearly impossible". If you know English well then you know that statement allows for the possibility that chewing gum DOES NOT APPLY to every single naija woman. If you asked why Akatas are bastards- it would still be a legitimate question since MOST black american children are raised only by a mother and no father.
