This is why Negativism doe not help us. i never knew until today that There is no one under the law that can

Generate
Transmit
Distibute Power.

Except the Federal government. That must change now.

Too right.

Exceptional people are rare. Therefore, you find that in discredited organisations normal people tend to look out for themselves, some want to grab what they can and then bale out before the rumoured collapse occurs. This could be a part of what is happening to the Nigeria polity, PLC (in other words, too many criticisms, which gives the impression of imminent disaster).  Praises are not a soft option. Indeed, not only can praises be expensive but also they are psychologically necessary. Praises tend to tie individuals down to moral obligation to do well and what’s more contrary to fears that it might make such individuals complacent, the work they do increases because people who issue praises expect more.  So, much Kudos to mister Fashiola

how many of them work?
remember that birth rate would probably be extremly high in that region due to lack of quality education (birth control wise).
Ration of inhabitant/working class will be way higher than that of Kano.
do some basic analysis and u will see where i am coming from.

Dis pikin take your time. you are comparing lagos and Kano with respect to population and taxes??

Kano has more population on paper but on ground is a different thing. Lagos wins.

hope you will not ask the Kano gov to tax almajiris to be able to catch up with lagos.
We don't want another rampage and churches burnt.

Rivers gov is trying on a serious note. just that the guy is not making noise about it.

i have always argued that mere construction of roads is not something to be seen as landmark achievement in government.re-orientation of the citizenry is extremely important.

Why denigrate a tax paying citizen for demanding government presence in their area. I will like fashola to also put effort and resources into urban planning particularly in the major town s of lagos state.

Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry it is easier to do it now than 10 years down the road.

Development cannot go all round Lagos once. You mentioned Lekki,VI Island. But let me tell you these are the major places that bring money. Any responsible governement will firstly spend money on places like before moving to other areas. Even at that, this is the first time I can see Local Govt repairing thier roads. This man has mandated them in repairing certain number of roads yearly. I m very sure it will go round. Let us all try and encourage this man and his team.

Are you okay. My generation has been waiting. My grandfather waited, my parents waited. They have all been obedient tax payers for the past 35years. We have nothing to show for it and you tell me to WAIT. Don't let me insult you.
To all of you making noise, the fact that the previous govt did not do what Fashola presumably is doing does not make Fashola a genius.

This is LAGOS for christ sake. I expect nothing less. You either steal money from the Lagos govt or u put it to good use.
This is the commercial nerve centre of west africa. Federal allocation or not, Lagos state government has more money than several states put together. Until the seat was moved to Abuja, most companies were headquartered in Lagos. many still are.

Listen to yourself, you prefer to use rumours to judge a man, I hope one day rumors will be used to judge you too. Slow pace? are you ok, why cant people just condition thier minds to see good, must we always look for wrong? Blueteeth I no blame you, akwa ibom enjoying an allocation of 30 to 33billion, Rivers 33 to 35biillion depending on the market price of crude oil,

I can tell you my state Akwa Ibom is on a tax pay of N120million monthly + 30billion we received last month how much is that?. , Lagos comes in as the second largest state in Nigeria(according to PDP) with 14billion tax money monthly + allocation of over 26 to 28 billion who has more money,

who should perform more, rethink, but brother don't forget the second richest state in Nigeria after lagos is Delta, amassing over 37 to 39billion monthly, have you forgotten Okonjo-Iweala at her time declared Delta richer than some but a good number of african countries!!!

They don't want to accept that lagos is a special state because of the various companies located there, the seaport and airport, the working class population, most taxes that are due to other states comes to lagos. So many small scale business here and there and the economic activities going on there is not comparable to other states.

Let fashola go and repeat such feat in a state like bornu, please don't get me wrong kudos to him for what he has done.  Nevertheless truth must be told in a true federal system where there are many lagos states fashola will not be the best governor.  In a true federal structure where each federating units are given economic freedom then we can truly judge if he is the best leader.

Other governors should bow down their heads in shame especially the eastern governors.
All they do is hire old women to sweep sand off the roads that other governors built.

Fashola now has shown that all the other governors have been old fashioned in their demonic level
of embezzlement and corruption.

Re: Lagos Generates N14b Tax Monthly –fashola by montelik(m): 7:18am On Nov 18, 2009
Fashola should take it easy with this "tax drive" initiative. Yes he is doing well and providing a good vision and direction. but this concept that is being pushed by so many I hear from his government is not the way forward. Revenue generation for the state coffers is good but using excessive taxation as a means to achieving it is not a sound long term strategy. The reality is that the Lagos state government bureaucracy is still too large, corrupt and inefficient. Raise all the amount of money in the world by taxing Lagosians, it wont help if there isn't a more efficient means of state delivery. Besides there are already so many small and medium businesses in Lagos who are already struggling to break-even with the ridiculous cost of doing business here, that adding a bigger tax burden will only stunt their growth or worse. I have helped prepare the taxes people like my uncle pay just for running an engineering consultancy in Lagos (state and local) and it is not small change. Comparing what he would pay as well as other similar smaller businesses I don't see the problem as insufficient revenue generation but instead an absolutely inefficient state and local government bureaucracy that instead of fixing the anomalies within itself, it is instead shifting a heavier burden unto the people. Do you know what some hotels in Lagos pay in just "luxury" taxes alone and I am not talking about Sheraton and the likes, I have and it isn't small change either.

"Fashola affirmed that over the next two decades, Lagos State would need about N2.6 trillion to provide qualitative and efficient network of roads and drainages; N1.3 trillion for power; N1.2 trillion for inter-modal transportation system, N650 billion for information and computer technology; N390 billion to expand and improve its water supply network, among others."

I hope his primary means of generating this revenue isn't through taxes. Lagos will become one of the most expensive cities to live in by such a time and with the inefficient government structures in place which refuse to be reformed, only God knows if the money will be used for what it is meant for. I pay my taxes, government came to help reconstruct the drainage on my street. They have dug up the entire drainage such that many can't drive out of their houses. May they started, abandoned work in July after the contractor made a huge error in construction and are now saying there isn't any money to complete the project despite the fact that they haven't even gotten half-way yet. Meanwhile LTV was here when work had commenced hailing the impact of government. We have tried to get them back since then but no luck.

Governor Fashola is doing well, don't get me wrong but the local and state government structures are corrupted. I wish he was doing more in the direction of drastic, far reaching reforms at those levels, than simply focusing on revenue generation. Revenue that will ultimately be wasted or used inefficiently by these same structures.
Re: Lagos Generates N14b Tax Monthly –fashola by rethink: 7:21am On Nov 18, 2009
There are 4 people that give me hope in Nigeria. There is Soludo, Fashola, Sanusi and Ribadu.

We need to immediately in Lagos build an Army of young men and women that would be nurtured to hold fort for Lagos.  Lagos state should go more for more tax like

1) Child tax
2) Road Usage tax, (let the monies be insignificant)
3) Since rent is an income it should be taxed( this fraud by the elite should stop now)

I can understand what just one decreee can do to a whole nation. It is tough but i was looking for a way arround the power issue.  WE MUST AS A MATTER OF URGENCY DEMONSTRATE THAT DECREE 13 BE AMENDED IMMEDIATELY

That said there are things that dont need power(Electricity).
is your
1)  road
2) transport
3)security
4) Education
5) Health

For those that know what revival is ; in scripture there is the breaking up of your fallow ground, there are areas of great fertility where production or fruitfullness can be obtained. when those places are clogged like the way Oshodi was then we see that there is no revival.

I believe that the way to build our ROAD INDUSTRY IN LAGOS STATE IS TO HAVE A ALLOTMENT SCHEME.

Road

I believe that the road is for motorist primarily they are the main users, my thinking of road is like a HOTEL ROOM. YOU pay as you use. I was some time ago discussing with some people and i told them that if the federal government wants to brings the price of cars down in nigeria, reduce corruption and heavy traffic, the government should scrap tax at the ports but bring about a road use payment.

What i mean by this is that you dont pay a single duty at the ports but when your car is shipped into nigeria and you want to use it you have to buy a road usage. My idea is that the payment would be 200%  for any car.

Now I will explain.

for example you bring in a car that costs 2million naira and you pay no single taxor duty at the port. but to drive the car on our roads you must have a Road usage of 4million naira.

if you decide not to drive the car again after a year the number given to you will be submitted back and your money would be paid back to you after which some deduction would have been made Like

insurance
Administrative charges

What this would mean is that instead of putting value on a car we are PUTTING VALUE ON THE HUMAN BEING THAT DRIVE ON THE ROAD,

back to Lagos state I dont know if the Lagos state government gives the plate number but if it does the above is what the lagos state can do. Now like i said the road is like a room you rent some people spend a 8 hours in a day on the road.

To have an effective road network you must give people the chance to come into road business so you divide the road into blocks. You then sell the blocks to road companies.

The Job of the road companies would be to

1) maintain street light, traffic light and street markings
2) collect toll
3) maintain drainage( all drainage must be covered nothing like open sewers)
4)Sweeping of the road(not with hands haba) and maintaining vegetation of the road
5) building of bus terminus to be used by TRANSPORT OPERATORS

Now so that if you are moving from point "A" to point "B" as a private motorist you pay a little fee but if you have a road usage fund your plate number is captured (it could have a simple readable chip or on camera) as using that road and deduction are made automatically from your road usage fund. Now not all the roads should be like this but it should be prime roads.

Transport

The transport issue is interwooven with Road. The usage of road is by people hence you have transportation. Lagos state has a massive population and you must take out the enterpreneur and allow companies to run the transport business.

Lagos is one of the most populated cities in the world, you cannot gove this to OKADA riders to run. You need to bring in more Transport Operators
Re: Lagos Generates N14b Tax Monthly –fashola by otukpo(f): 7:55am On Nov 18, 2009
Fashola is doing great, but i must confess that the LG or LCDA"s whatever they are called is not doing anything. We are not the presence of the local Govt's in any positive way except for coming to collect one tax or the other. Take for instance in okota/Isolo area, all the roads are bad. Ilasa-Ire akari rd, Isolo - ago Palce way, infact all the roads in that area are bad, not one tarred. The state govt must not do evrything, that is why the LG's are there, but they ar not doing anything. even the refuse collectors don't get to all the streets.

Gov. Chime is also doing well and not making noise abt it.
Re: Lagos Generates N14b Tax Monthly –fashola by rhymz(m): 7:56am On Nov 18, 2009
Fashola of course is doing a great job in Lagos but let's not get carried away and start criticizing other state governments without taking into cognizance the scale of the monies that accrues to Lagos state.
Lagos state has the Largest Market both in West Africa and sub-sahara Africa,Lagos has the Largest industrial base in the whole of Nigeria,it is the host of all the company in any Nigeria, there's hardly any multinational that in Nigeria that do not have its presence in Lagos.Let's not forget that Lagos states was once the seat of power, capital of this country and enjoyed heavy infrastructural development and Foriegn direct investment any capital will enjoy just as Abuja is presently enjoying. With all these advantages and a good leadership it is imperative that if Lagos succeeds,it will be in a Large Scale.
It will be totally out of place for anybody to compare the pace of development in Lagos state and say Edo state.Lagos States earns a whooping #16billion per month and Edo State just recently trippled thier IGR to #900 million after the introduction of tax and other initiatives introduced by Adams Government to generate funds internally.
So my point is,Lagos State has a lot of monies in it's coffers as a result of it's advantageous position and that is why it's development is in a large scale.Left to me,I think Fashola should be praised on the fact that he was able to introduce initiatives that helped to increase thier IGR,just like every other state Government is doing at present. And of course we can't deny his courageous leadership style but for anyone to argue on the basis of the IGR Lagos state generates and use it as a yardstick to guage performance, that won't be fair at all to all other state governments who also are taking different initiatives to increase their IGR, of course Lagos will always surpass them in that area and in effect, other areas.Even Fashola won't perform magic if he was in another state where their coffers is not as large as Lagos'.Eko kO Ni Ba je
