I will quit after 2010 World Cup - Kanu



CAPTAIN of the Super Eagles, Nwankwo Kanu has said that he will hang up his international boots after the World Cup campaign in South Africa next June.


The Portsmouth of England forward made this known immediately after the Nigerians booked a place at the finals of the 2010 mundial with a 3-2 victory over the Harambee Stars of Kenya in Kasarani.

“I will quit after this World Cup. I cannot play when I am 50. I have reached the heights and my aim is to go to World Cup. I thank God that finally after all the fight, all the struggle, all the hard work, we are there," said the former Arsenal player.

Kanu also praised the Kenyans but indicated his confidence that a winner was going to come.

“Kenya have a very good team," Kanu told Goal.com. "They played well but we are happy to win. Despite the pressure, we knew we could do it. It was just was a matter of time. Now we have a chance to go to World Cup and do well. Our chances are good," he said.

Kanu was an unused substitute in the weekend's match. During the previous encounter between the two teams in Nigeria, he came off the bench to help the Super Eagles turn the tables on the dominant Harambee Stars.

It would be the third time Kanu, who captained the Dream Team to win the Atlanta '96 Olympics gold, would feature in the World Cup after his appearances at France '98 and Korea/Japan 2002.
