My dear, naija labour market is very unique.
A lot of guys in your field recommend PSE. However, you will be shocked by the number of telecom practioneers that can tell the meaning of that acronym not to talk of having the qualification.
That said, what works for Donald may not necessarily work for Trump!
I met an HSE manager of a multinational telecom, coincidentally, and he was battling with the rudiments of risk assessment! He travels round the world and has been on the job for years.
Many guys in HSE have more qualifications than this young man.....but the naija labour market is what it is, a mystery.

If you have some cash, I suggest you get certifications like CCNA, CCNP, Comptia+ and so on, that will stand you out among your mates looking for direct entry position also.
I used about three months to prepare for CCNA, on my own, you don't need to waste your money on any tutorial, the exams are expensive already, just get necessary materials and softwares, practice dumbs very well also, with all these, you will be fine.
For CCNA preparation, you can check out 9tut.com
Good luck!

This Issue of people posting "those that give a Bleep go here or go there,..i dont give a Bleep, ..Bleep this, Bleep that etc, etc...is becoming a nuisance, boring , lame and extremely very childish..

I actually tot I was the only one observing .it was quite useful at some point when mods just move the most senseless of threads to front page but when pple even use it in very educative and sensitive threads, it became worrisome...at first I tot they are just kids using the Internet and then I realized my 11year old niece is on nairaland and her posts will wow u.....u'll think u are having a conversation with an adult when u exchange posts with her..
then I concluded it's just outright insanity for u not to give a damn to something important. It's one thing not to have something constructive to say about a sensitive matter, thats understandable.but to say nonsensee ....now that's plain madness not yet roaming the streets in rags

all the three outline course are good, just be focused and take your study serious, learn everything. most telecoms training are vendor specific and not available to individuals but you can take the cisco track but telecom companies are moving away from the tradition E1 to IP. Best of luck.

Well I think u shdnt blame the guy who mentioned CONNECTION.

I am a field service engr with a Telecom vendor presently and I know that most of my colleagues got this job because they are well connected to the recruiters. In fact one of the recruiters here is so notorious that u must grease his palm frequently, even after being hired, to stay in d job.
Field servive tho! Things may not be the same with the men @ the Core i.e those Route and Switch guys.

Secondly, I think the hype about telecom is now fake. It's not as lucrative as b4 again. It's a field where illiterates have penetrated so much and the few intelligent people therein are being endangered.

Hi, a Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Physics, Physics Electronics with a First Class or Second Class Upper will almost certainly get you an entry level job into any of the Telecoms company. At least it will get you an interview. I worked in the recruitment unit of one of the GSM Operators for over seven years. Graduate of other Engineering Disciplines have good chances provided they have good result 1st Class/ Second Class Upper. Second Class Lower with relevant Master's Degree is also considered.

I work in a Telecom company. The trend in the industry is fast changing and I will advise you to position yourself for the future. Field operation and field maintenance functions in Telecoms companies are being outsourced to Telecoms coy like Ericsson, Huawei, IHS (facilities, infrastructure maintenance). In those companies, graduates of PSE will have jobs but trust me, mostof those jobs can be dead end having no sterling future prospects in the scheme of things - at best you keep on doing the same thing with some little changes.

What is the future of Telecoms? The trend is IP, Cloud Technology, Application-based solutions. On this note, I'll strongly advise you to follow a career path that gets you footing and assures you climbing on the right ladder into the future.

So in summary:
1. go for ECE or COE for your undergraduate study
2. Finish with very good grade (minimum 2.1 or Upper Credit)
3. Get relevant certifications relevant to future-demanding technologies e.g. IP Technologies (Cisco - CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, Juniper, etc). Read more on certification tracks on www.cisco.com/certifications. Get skills/certification on others, like cloud computing, network security and solutions architecture and designs. Also, read up on IT Projects and Business certifications e.g. PMP, PRINCE2, ITIL, AGILE, SCRUM, SIX SIGMA, etc. There are some Telecoms/IT jobs where coding/scripting/software development skills are demanded. Most foreign jobs posted in Telecoms section have these in very high demand. Most of these guys work on the applications side - VAS (Value Added Services e.g. callerbacktunes, Callerfeel, etc.
4. Get a job that gives you experience along any of the above or similar career track and work steadily but swiftly around to learn the ropes and be an authority. Prioritise on company where there is training and exposure to these technologies; the pay may not be much but stick with a company that teaches you hands-on skills. Get as many relevant certifications as you can, ensuring you follow through to at least professional level of your core career track within the first three (3) years of your working.
5. Strategically, look out for a change of roles or position after the first 3 years of your job - it may be with same organisation or outside of it. Recruitment people (HR) seems to love people who have strong career mobility.
6. After your first 3 years, get expert certifications. Also, go for your MSc or MBA, to prepare you for taking up managerial positions.
Continuous learning is the key! Don't spend your early money you made at work to buy Lexus 350 and take up 3 bedroom flat in Lekki!!! Use it instead to invest in your career. If you must travel out, let it be that you go for workshops and seminars relevant to your career! Don't just go there to sleep in expensive hotels and riding in yachts!
Above all, fear God and keep all His commandments! Follow experienced and highly-knowledgeable career gurus in the house like Jarus and Ajanlekoko! These guys are good!

I'm a student of pse.
300lvl
If u don't mind me asking... where do u work/where do we work/what are the challenges
on a normal day and in a normal situation, PSE grad can work in any company once they make use of electricity supply. As a 300lvl student , if u havent done ur IT , u can do ur IT at Transmission company of Nigeria or a Power Generation company like Egbin and co or a company that has power euipment that u can learn from their maintenance team, those are d places where u can learn PSE better in terms of practical .They always accept IT student though they dont pay. But as far as where u can work , u can work anywhere. But the best way to start a career in Nigeria is to enter any organisation through their Graduate Trainee program and at the end of the day , u might end up working in a telecom company. Most companies dont ask for your option when they want to employ, they ask for Elect/Elect graduate. So just focus on what u are doing and pass with good grades , the rest will settle itself after graduation and service. As for where i work, i finished my NYSC 2 months ago and still searching for a job. And the thing is in Nigeria , u just search for any job just to sustain urself, if u are lucky to get a job in ur line u build ur career around it and if its other way round , you use your brain to determine ur future. Dont be scared , Just grad with good grades and other things will fall in.

Google E1 and IPRAN

IP - IP RAN means when the end -to-end system is IP based, including radio, RNC (in 3G) or the packet core (in LTE).

E1 - Similar to the North American T-1, E1 is the European format for digital transmission. E1 carries signals at 2 Mbps (32 channels at 64Kbps, with 2 channels reserved for signaling and controlling), versus the T1, which carries signals at 1.544 Mbps (24 channels at 64Kbps).

You wouldn't wanna take as a sophomore because they use to expire over a period of time, for example CCNA is just three years, unless you plan to CCNP along the way, it's better you take them when you're a senior or final year.
I think CCNA is $250

Yes you can, if you think you smart enough, I didn't attend any tutorial and I almost had a perfect score, although you need to prepare very well and use the right material, if you have some extra cash then you can go for tutorial but I didn't coz I wasn't. Just get a prometric testing center and register for the exam. I also think you can go to Cisco website and register by yourself, then select location and just walk up there to take the test, I did that for my CCNP but I don't know if it's applicable in Naija.
Check out 9tut.com, its a great site for CCNA.
