The promise by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to fully utilise the abandoned Gelegele seaport has stirred
hope of full scale employment to jobless youths in and out of the state.
Obaseki, during his New Year broadcast, recalled his promise to breathe life into the seaport, which is strategically located in an agrarian community, saying it was part of his policies to make Edo State the economic hub of the South South geo-political zone.
To underline his seriousness, the governor has set up a sevenman committee to be chaired by Gregory Ero for the development of seaport.
The governor noted that the development of Gelegele as a port and industrial zone was of high priority to the state, as it would improve the economic competitiveness of the
state.
“I have therefore set up a seven-member high powered committee headed by Engineer Gregory Ero, to establish Gelegele, as a foremost economic and industrial hub in Nigeria,’’ he said.
The governor had during his electioneering campaign promised to among others to also set up technical and vocational school in Gelegele.
He also promised to focus on women empowerment by giving them loans to grow their businesses as well as investing in mechanised farming. He further disclosed that he had met with the minister of transport and had planned to make the Gelegele seaport a container terminal so that economic activities would be improved in the state.
“There are so many things I will do as governor; one is empowerment of the youths. We will set up technical and vocational school in gelegele and ensure that everyone has a skill to either repair computer or do tailoring so that you will be able to feed yourselves and family.
“We will also focus on women empowerment. We will give
women loans to grow their businesses. We will also deal with agriculture by investing in mechanised farming. We already have companies who are willing to invest in the state and create jobs for every Edo person,” Obaseki said. The construction of Gelegele seaport will provide employment to thousands of Edo indigenes and even non-indigenes.
The seaport will increase the internally generated revenue of Edo state and boost the transportation of the largest deposits of crude oil and gold recently discovered in the
community. At the moment, low level fishing and trading in condensate (mistaken by the local people as diesel) go on in the area and serve as the major sources of revenue for the people.
New Telegraph’s finding revealed that turning the seaport into a full-fledged container terminal is more realistic than attempting to make it a seaport for large ocean going
vessels. It is believed that the project, when fully in use, would serve as a feeder to the South East, South West and South South as youths and other unemployed people would become fully engaged.
Speaking with our correspondent, Mr. Linus Onuoha, a business man based in Edo state, said the port project would definitely alter the unemployment status of the state as youths would always troop to the seaport to look for legitimate means of earning a living.
According to him, “the idea of a container seaport is a good one in terms of job creation. That also means opening more roads to so many communities thereby giving people various opportunities to get engaged in one thing or the other.
“In my estimation, that project of actually realised would provide direct and indirect employment for over 200,000
people across the state.
If you understand how seaport operates then you realise that there are so many value chains that can be tapped
into by the people. Think of those who will work directly at the port, the divers, motor boys, food vendors and so many others.”
He, however, advised the governor to ensure that the project is not placed in the hands of touts who will end up making life difficult for those making use of it.
Onuoha, who is also a transporter, however, noted that the governor should also ensure the roads in and out of the project site are befitting enough to accommodate vehicles that will be moving goods in and out of the terminal.
He said: “As a transporter, I know what it means for those in the business if roads are bad. It is one of the heartbreaking experiences in the business.
So I will advise the governor to ensure that the commitment to the project is all embracing in order to ensure unhindered business activities.”
