IKADA: THRONE OF LOVE
The orange sun was gradually fading into the indigo skies, evening had come and he knew he had to find a place to hide himself.
He had journeyed from his kingdom for two moon nights, this was the third day and he was yet to arrive his destination.
Akan struggled with the thick vegetation of the bush, he needed to find a place to rest his head, he’d slept on the naked floor of forests for two moon nights, he had to sleep on the floor just for that night and morning would take him to Afafang, where his mission would be complete.

There were three clans, Ekpe-yong, Antai and Afafang, all were sovereign and handled matters independently, but Ekpe-nyong was the greatest and strongest of them all.
Her sons and daughters ruled the lands like the stars of the skies, in their numbers they had created for themselves a large army. Their rivers never ran dry and had much fish to feed the massive population, they had palm fruits which gave them all and they traded with other kingdoms and made great wealth but the King still wasn’t satisfied.
It had started like rumors, then the priest had confirmed it, there was a hidden treasure in Afafang that could threaten the wealth and very existence of Ekpe-yong and Antai, for Ekpe-yong sought for only one thing: power and total control of the other kingdoms.
‘May the gods be praised’ Akan exhaled slowly as he neared a stream, the vegetation was lush and the whole arena smelt of clay mixed with rain water, he quickly rushed towards the water body, he needed to be quick about it.

He dropped his leopard skin bag and his sword and bent to drink from the stream, the wind was mild and the swaying of the palms cooled his ebony skin.
He fell on his knees and scooped some water from the stream with his bare palms, he hadn’t taken up to two palm full of it when he felt something cold on his back, he was a warrior and he knew this object was a blade.
‘Rise slowly and turn around, don’t try anything stupid and by the gods don’t dare me’ the gruff voice ordered.
***
‘Why do you cry mother’? Afiamma dropped her water pot and rushed to her mother’s side, she had just returned from the stream.

‘Nothing child…’ the woman hadn’t heard when her daughter had returned.

‘You lie mother, what is bothering you’ the girl wrapped her hands round her mother.

‘It bothers me sometimes…’ the woman sobbed, many years back she had been banished from Afafang, so they both lived in the outskirts of the land.

‘What bothers you mother’? the girl asked.

‘How we’ll eventually end up, look at us, living outside our own land, I think about you child, how would you ever marry when they know we’re both cursed’? the woman sobbed.

‘Cursed? Did the gods pronounce us cursed? Or the people chose to reject you because you saved me from death’ the girl replied and the woman looked up feeling surprised.
She had never revealed to the girl the truth of which she wasn’t her biological mother, how come she knew about the circumstances that led to her banishment?

‘The gods told me…’ she smiled ruefully. She had a gift, a third eye which saw things of the spirit world, things of the past and things to come in future.

‘I am sorry I kept it away from you, I didn’t want you to stop loving me, I didn’t want you to ask me questions I had no answer to, I didn’t want to be left alone’ the woman cried.

‘It’s okay mother, the gods know everything, if you hadn’t picked me from that forest, I would’ve been dead’ she replied.

‘You see child, I was barren for many years, my husband took a new wife who didn’t waste time providing heirs for him, but these children all died successively and I was accused of being a witch, that I ate them up. I was taken to the shrine to swear my innocence, I did, but the gods had refused to say a word to the priest, but I was allowed to live my life for a certain period of time after which my case would be re-visited. My husband’s love had turned into hatred, I lived in fear and pain that one day he could strike me dead with his sword.
I left for the stream one morning to water my plant beds, then I heard a child cry, I quickly rushed and found you in the forest, I called for help, I cried out for people, but no one came, that was when I decided to take you home.
I showed you to my husband and begged he allow me keep you, he just looked at me and walked past, like I had said nothing, I nursed you for two market weeks then the unthinkable happened…’ she stopped and broke into tears.

‘What happened’? Afiamma asked.
‘My husband and his new wife died shortly after that, that was when the priest openly accused me of witchcraft, that I had killed all members of my family, if not for the ruling king then, Obong Ikpaisong, I would’ve been buried alive as was the custom when someone was found guilty of witchcraft, but he chose to spare my life and yours, that’s how we came to live here’ the woman explained.

‘I see, thanks again mother for saving me, I wish the gods revealed to me my parents and why they chose to abandon me, I would always love you mother more than anything else’ she rubbed her mother’s face.

‘I love you too my darling child, my jewel, who grows more beautiful as the day goes by’ she smiled happily.
Afiamma was as her name implied, ‘Fair woman’, her skin was white like goat’s milk and tender like the morning leaves soaked in dew, she was truly beautiful to behold.
‘So, why is this king different? The people do not like his rule, I see their sad faces each night when I dream’ she asked curiously.

‘Ah, Eduwem has always been a mischievous little devil, he succeeded his brother as Ikpaisong had no male child, his rule is terrible indeed’ the woman shook her head.
‘Well, soon, all that would be over, pain would be taken away from the land and a new ruler with a good heart would rule the three clans which would be merged together eventually.’ She smiled.

‘Did the gods show you this’? her mother asked.
‘Yes, he is already here’ she replied as the vision faded.

‘Who are you stranger’? the guard asked still pointing the blade at him, he wasn’t alone, they were many others dressed like him, from what Akan could see, they were a score.

Their chests were bare and they tied leopard skin on their loins with chests painted with soot and dyes. These were warriors from Afafang, he wasn’t afraid, no, a warrior never feared he only smiled as he realized he’d reached his destination.

‘Speak, Stranger’ the guard was getting impatient with the man.

‘Hold back your sword, Aduma, set the man free’ a voice from behind commanded as the warriors parted for their prince.

‘As you wish my lord’ Aduma bowed and walked away wondering what the regal had with the strange man.

‘You must be Akan, the warrior lord we’ve heard so many stories about, our musicians sing your praises and women, even married, whisper about your handsomeness’ the Prince paused.

‘Ekong…’ Akan acknowledged the prince, they’d met in battle before.

‘That is my name, warrior, so what brings your uninvited feet to our dear kingdom? What does Ekpe-yong want with Afafang’? Prince Ekong asked

‘Something we all could share’ Akan replied noting the mocking glare from the prince.

‘Truly, our gods do not lie, we have been expecting you, come with me to the palace where you shall meet face to face with the lion of Afafang, my lord and father, King Eduwem’ the Prince commanded.

‘Very well then, I shall do as you have commanded’ Akan trailed behind him but in between two fierce looking warriors.

‘What do you think of our lands? I know Ekpe-yong is suddenly afraid we might take over from them, but you don’t have to be’ Prince Akan tried to converse while they walked towards the palace.

‘Your land is beautiful’ Akan inhaled deeply as they passed through the streets of Afafang.
The huts were larger than those in Ekpe-yong and Antai, they were colored with white clay and shells from the perinwinkle and oyster. Animals were tied at each corner and crops spread their leaves all over the place. How had they attained such greatness?

‘I see, you are still afraid we would conquer you and become sole ruler of the three clans’ Ekong scoffed.

‘What makes you think I am afraid’? Akan sneered, though the land of Afafang flowed with milk and honey, it wasn’t a secret that her inhabitants were unhappy and poor. King Eduwem was a tyrant and a very greedy man, him along his cabinet of corrupt chiefs had poisoned his brother and taken over the land.

The people paid heavy tax to them, in cowry, in livestock and in land, they lived in penury.

‘Who wouldn’t be? We know what brought you here, you have no other choice than to be afraid. Soon our land would rise and conquer yours, it is just a matter of time, but that can be averted, I believe that was why your king sent you’ Ekong said.

Yes, it was true, for the first time, Ekpe-yong was afraid, for they knew the evil nature of King Eduwem, if truly, he had something of value, a treasure that he could wield to his advantage, then, all was lost as he would stop at nothing to kill the other rulers and take over their lands. That was why his king had sent him to Afafang, to persuade Eduwem to surrender or the three clans would go into war.
‘For a prince, you talk too much’ Akan remarked and the warriors beside him frowned.

‘Leave him be, he thinks highly of himself, he is favored by the gods’ the Prince felt insulted by the warrior.

‘Ukpono enyene Obong Ekong, praises to the prince of the land, may you live long and may the works of your hand prosper’ the praise singers welcomed the prince of the land.

‘Thanks, thanks’ Ekong smiled and stepped into his father’s palace, soon everything would be his’.

‘Ah, here comes the son of my enemy, your father, King Ekpeyong has sent you on an errand, I am glad to receive you nevertheless’ King Eduwem spoke from his iron throne.

‘Ukpono enyene Obong Eduwem, praises to the king of the land, may you live long and may your works prosper, I am no son of a king, but a warrior who was sent a message to you’ Akan dropped his sword and prostrated before the king.

‘Akan, the warlord, I have seen you with my very eyes’ King Eduwem clapped his hands.

‘Fetch me, my lovely wife, the love of my old age’ King Eduwem ordered the guards.

‘Rise warrior from Ekpe-yong, tonight we shall be friends and when Dawn sets in, we begin our war’ The king ordered.

The priest had told him about the vision he had, a warrior had trespassed, but this warrior had come in peace, to send a message from his king.

‘Thank you my lord’ Akan bowed.

‘Here you are darling, why did you disturb my sleep’? a beautiful maiden ambled into the palace.

Akan was awestruck by her beauty, never in his life had he beheld such a fair woman, she was indeed very beautiful.

‘I want you to meet someone you have heard about, Akan, the warlord from Ekpe-yong’ the king pointed at him.

‘What a wonder’ the pretty maiden gasped as she ran her eyes over the most striking man she’d ever seen.

‘I knew you would like him, this is my tenth and last wife, Isang’ the King said.
‘May you live long my queen’ Akan bowed his head. Her beauty could confused a man even the wisest of them.
Isang was the youngest wife of the king, she was his favorite and she used this to her advantage.
Her brown skin was smooth and clear like honey, her legs were rounded and firm, her hips were alluring to any man, they ignited a fire in his loins and her breasts which were covered stood proudly on her chest. Isang was a paragon of beauty, her oval face contained large almond eyes which were deep brown, a well rounded nose and big red lips. She was a living goddess.

‘So, what brings you to my husband’s court’? she asked. The man that stood before her made her blood boil with lustful yearnings, she wished to have him in her bed.

‘My king sent me’he replied.

‘Good, come, let me show you where you will sleep, even a stranger deserves hospitality’ she exchanged glares with her husband, who nodded his head in approval.

‘As it pleases my queen’ he bowed before the king and followed her.

‘What do you think about him’? Prince Ekong sauntered into the palace once Akan was gone.

‘We could use him to our advantage, we can turn him over our side to win this war’the King rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

‘I do not like him, he seems very loyal to Ekpeyong, he could betray us’ Prince Ekong replied.

‘I trust he is a good man, that’s why I have allowed Isang to grace his bed for the night, I want him to know I trust him’ the king said.

‘What? How could you do such despicable thing father? Allowing a strange man love your wife’? Ekong was infuriated, how could his father allow Akan to make love to his beloved Isang?
Since the day he’d set eyes on her, he had fallen in love with his father’s wife though they loved in secret.

‘She is my property and I can do what I want with her’ the man replied fiercely.

‘As you wish father’ the prince bowed his head.

‘Now we have received news from Ekpeyong, they know we have treasure and we would win this war, what have you gotten from Antai’? the king asked, she was the weakest of all the clans.

‘The king has refused to join forces with us, but his wife, Queen Eyoita has agreed to fight with us’ the prince said.
‘How can a woman make that happen’? the king was intrigue by such bravery.

‘She plans to kill him tonight’ the prince replied.
***
*ANTAI…..*
Antai was the weakest of the three clans and they knew this, so their survival was based on tactful planning and pitching a tent on the winning side anytime disputes arose between the three clans.

‘My King, her majesty is right, Unarguably, the forces of Ekpeyong are double ours and Afafang’s combined, but I still believe we should fight with Afafang and overthrow king Ekpeyong, I have spoken to Prince Ekong, son of Eduwem, his father has made us many promises, if we fight alongside with him’ one of the chiefs spoke.

‘You have spoken well, Chief Ekpene, but I would not allow my kingdom to be involved in this power tussle between two proud and arrogant kings’ the king replied.

‘Darling husband, how can you say such a thing? In life, there is nothing like warm, it’s either you are hot or cold, there is no middle, we have to choose a side or we might as well drink poison and die’ Queen Eyoita said.

‘You’re abusing your powers as queen, you have forgotten your place as a woman’ he barked at her like a wounded dog.
‘I know your ego wouldn’t let you see the truth, Afafang has discovered treasure that would help us all and make life better, look at us, we are the weakest and poorest, if we fight with Eduwem, much fortune shall we gain’ she refused to cower before the weak man she had married.

‘Enough! I would listen to you, if you bore me a son or a daughter, you are a very barren woman and you have nothing but shame in you’ he wouldn’t be defied.

‘Alright then, my lord husband, I would take my shame and leave, don’t say I didn’t warn you’ she rose to her feet swiftly and stormed out of his court.
He had humiliated her yet again, how was it her fault that she was barren? Did a woman give herself children? Or the gods were those who blessed with the gift of fertility?

‘I shall end my shame in only one way’ she inhaled deeply and poured the extracts of the poisonous plant into the gourd she held.

‘What was that about’? he stormed into her chambers .

‘I am sorry my king and husband, I spoke foolishly, I shall never say a word in the presence of a stranger’ she fell on her knees and begged for forgiveness.

‘You know how much I hate to be defied, rise to your feet, I have forgiven you’ he rubbed he head gently.
‘I made you a drink my love, it would help you sleep and make you forget your nightmares’she offered him the gourd.

‘What’s in it? Smells very good’ he inhaled the potion.

‘Wolowo leaves and mmayang, kernel oil’ she replied and watch him gulp the potion.
