Jarus:SPOT ON GREAT LIST I'll add Finidi George and may be El Hadj Diouf. Watch the 2002 world cup footage again to see how good diouf was. He was by a long shot the best player in the 2002 version of the ACN. |

If the likes of Kallon can make it ,then Africa has not produced many illustrious and infact World Class players to choose from. |

Simple, George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, WPOTY and BdO 1995, AFOTY 3x (1989, 1994, 1995). Second would be Roger Milla, with Abedi Ayew 'Pele' third. |

Sauron, I disagree with your choice of Youssef Fofana and Nii Lamptey. Fofana wont make the list of top 20 Ivorian players also Lamptey was just an underaged star Just like Opabunmi. |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by Sauron1: 7:52pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
dayokanu: Lamptey won under 17 and under 20. . . . .Has Opabunmi done that yet? Pele rated this guy but Lamptey had the rotten luck to have been born in the wrong decade. He lit up African football in the early 90s. I should also add Moustafa Hadji to the list. |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by dayokanu(m): 7:58pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
Lamptey won under 17 and under 20. . . . .Has Opabunmi done that yet? Dimeji Lawal, Taiwo Enegwa did the same in canada 1987 and Saudi 1989. Pele rated this guy but Lamptey had the rotten luck to have been born in the wrong decade. Pele rates Godwin Okpara to be world footballer of the year. He lit up African football in the early 90s. In the early 90's he was a "teenage" star The real players in Ghana then were Tony Bafoe, Abedi, Prince Opoku Polley, Ibrahim Ali and Tony Yeboah. Lamptey was thought to be the future with Daniel Addo, Augustine Ahinful(Remember his goal in Australia 1993 finals), Isaac and Emmanuel Asare, How can I forget Osei Kuffuor . he should be the most succesful Ghanaian after Abedi |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by Sauron1: 8:06pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
dayokanu: Dimeji Lawal and Taiwo Enegwa did not win in those tournaments. They were finalists. . . . .Odartey Lamptey won gold medals in 1991 and 1993. It is hard to ignore a player that was the 5th best player in Africa at the age of 16.
As far as natural talent is concerned, Okpara and Lamptey had the fibre to have become world class players. What ruined most African stars then was the agents and senseless contracts they dived into in the desperation to leave Africa. Imagine if Lamptey had been under Wenger or SAF in those years. . . . .He had an amazing talent.
In the early 90s, he was starting games for Ghana. . . . . .I remember him playing against Nigeria in Senegal 92. Lamptey was class in his years. . . . .
Tony Yeboah!!!! |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by dayokanu(m): 8:19pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
Dimeji Lawal and Taiwo Enegwa did not win in those tournaments. Lamptey only won Italia 1991 scoring a bicylcle kick against Brazil in the quaters he was losing finalist in Australia too. Benny Mccarty and Wilson Oruma were highly rated in the early stages of their career. In the early 90s, he was starting games for Ghana. . . . . .I remember him playing against Nigeria in Senegal 92. OK when was Lampteys best year and best tournament at Senior level to make hm more than a teenage star like Wilson Oruma or Nduka Ugbade Nduka Ugbade achieved the same thing with Lamptey did. U17 Champion in 1985, U21 runners up in 1989 |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by Sauron1: 8:30pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
dayokanu: Senegal 92. . . . . .
Ugbade n Oruma were peripherals for Nigeria throughout their career. I can't remember em pinning down a position in any tournament. |

Was Nii Lamptey ever a teenager . This guy was in his 20's when he claimed to be 16-17. His school mates recognized him vey well. There was even a furore over his age in ghana during that period. Many Ghanians new he was not the age he claimed to be |
Re: Who Is The Greatest Footballer That Has Ever Come Out Of Africa? by AndreUweh(m): 9:14pm On Aug 22, 2009 |
What a great player he was then. Belloumi refused to go professional when a team like Juventus came calling. Indeed, he is one of Africa's greatest. |

jalether: Even Samuel Etoo will slap you for this blasphemy. George Weah is the greatest footballer from Africa. WPOTY, European Player of The Year in 1995. . . . . . . .There's no African that would beat that record in the next 5 centuries. |
