One of the major tenets of existentialism is “Existence precedes Essence”. What does the word 'existence' mean? Do you exist or do you live? We limit the usage of these terms to their connotations in existentialism.

A painting is made of a bus full of people. There are many passengers in the bus. There is only one driver in the same bus. According to the tenets of existentialism, it is only the driver in that bus who exists, others are just living. In this sense, existence means taking decisions and being responsible for such decisions. It is the driver of the bus who decides where the bus goes and he takes responsibility for his decisions.

The society is like a bus. It carries many people inside. Some people stay inside the society without knowing that they have to determine what is happening in the society. They keep quiet and they allow others to determine the running of the society for them. At last they only begin to lament.

Do you know that the society in which you live belongs to all the citizens? Are you a driver there or a passenger? Do you exist there or do you live? If you keep quiet while things are going wrong and you allow corrupt politicians to decide the tide of things for you, you are only a passive passenger. If you are aware that you have to join in deciding the direction of events in the society, you are a driver and you are existing.

Unfortunately, many Africans are passive passengers in their societies. They keep quiet. They allow the society to be run by very few corrupt politicians. That is why Africa is always backwards.
