THE CORRUPTION CURRENTLY GOING ON AT NIGERIAN PEACE CORPS IN OWERRI

With the news that the senate have passed a bill to recognize the Nigerian Peace Corps as a security arm of the Federal government of Nigeria, as expected many people indicated their interest to be a part of it by purchasing the form and engaging in the subsequent training that normally follows. All across the Federation recruitments and sales of form have been going on without any problem.
But a visit to the Nigerian peace corps owerri command, located in Area L World bank housing estate New owerri will sure give one the glimpse that the much praised Nigerian peace corps known for humanitarian and charity works, might not be different form the Nigerian police and other security arms of government when it comes to recruiting using corrupt means. For instance to obtain the form which normally goes for N1500 (one thousand five hundred naira) is now being sold through the back door for as much as N20, 000, (twenty thousand naira) and above. The staff and workers have all shared the form among themselves with the aim of extorting money from prospective participants. A visit to their office in World Bank area L owerri will confirm the level of extortion that is being witnessed there. While they (the staffs and workers) will claim that the forms have finished, they will try to pressure you to part with N20, 000 to N50, 000 in order for you to get the form, meanwhile the forms are meant to be sold for a price of 1500 naira.
I am now forced to ask; if these peace corps ‘officers’ have formed this habit of extorting money from people seeking to join the corps now that the Peace corps is not yet a federal arm of the government, how much more when they are finally recognized as a federal body.
I want to use this medium to call the attention of the National commandant Dickson Akor, and whomever is in charge of imo state command to swing into action and check this ugly, corrupt extortionist springing up within the Peace corps members.
