Good evening nairalanders.

Please I need a career defining advice from profeasionals here.

I am a Bsc holder, finished serving in 2015 after which I got a sales executive (contract) job with a bank 5months after Nysc but unfortunately I lost the job towards ending of 2016 as a result of a mistake (documentation issue with a customer) made by me. Ever since then, its has been tough getting another job. I recently got an invite for aptitude test for the post of a sales representativr by a top organization in the power industry. The test comes up tomorrow and i must submit my updated CV. I applied for d job when I was still working at d bank.

My question is

1. Should I still include the sales executive job experience I have at d bank or not?

2. If I am to include the work experience, is there a way I can defend the previous mistake?

Please I need sincere advice, it took me a lot of courage to say this out in a public forum...

Mistakes are inevitable. Don't hide the experience as it is needed. There's no big deal. Include ur experience, and if they ask you bout the previous job, tell them boldly bout the mistake, and let them know you've learnt a great lesson from it.

I agree with the person above me. Am sure they will see through your sincerity but don't cover up anything.

All the best!

Wait a minute. You're thanking someone for telling you to go tell them you made a mistake in your last job? That's a recipe for losing any new job.

The best thing you can tell them is you left your previous work because the salary wasn't enough anymore due to the recession. Or you live far from your work place and couldn't keep up with the work.

Good luck!.

If I am eventually given the job won't they go to my previous employer to do their findings about why I left d place? If they find out that's another mistake again which will eventually lead to loosing d new job. Or is it that companies don't do background check before or after employing new staff?

Its not likely they'll do that. Of course, it depends on the type of company or job. But, most companies wouldn't do that. Even if they contact them, they'll simply want to know if you indeed worked there before, not why you're no longer working there. Your previous company wouldn't even tell them, if they ask.

add ur previous experience and if they ask u why u left them, just simply tell them ur bank job was a CONTRACT, then background check, hence u didn't commit any criminal offence, u hv nothing to worry, bcs if ur current employer happens to call ur previous employer, they only want to know if truly u worked with them that's all, beside, 80-95% companies hardly make a background check.
Then, things that warrant all this background check both in ur result and previous employer, is when a B.SC holder starts behaving below SSCE holder, in terms of composure, communication, reasoning etc, that's when questions about u will start coming out.

Thanks... The funny thing is that I have not being including my previous work experience on my CV recently because of that issue and I have been getting several interview invite. Not including the previous work experience has been limiting my chances of getting a new job cos without the necessary experience this HR personnels won't Take someone serious.

u see everyday in life we learn, if you want to outsmart HR's tell them that you know the job and u can do it very well even if its something u hv not done before. For example my first job things i told the HR are things i hv no ideal about, i convinced him to the extend i was in charge during the interview. Then, their is another special way to outsmart HR's

Always include previous RELEVANT work experience.

If the mistake was not deliberatly done with intent to committ crime, then there is no need to hide it. Unless, the mistakes are too often, which means you are not fit for the role.

Mistakes are part of learning process.

Your new company will benefit from that experience.

wrong advice.
Which means u don't work consciously.
What made u to make a mistake? That means a slight distraction can make u to make mistakes.

Just be truthful, telling them your past experiences shows you have some knowledge on how to handle mistakes, there's no perfect person.

my brother just tell them your experience and also you worked as a contract staff. if they ask you your experience always have something to say at every time , dnt keep quite as if you are thinking. jobs i have gotten so far , i have been using that Technics and it works. make sure you are smiling , when you smile it make the interviewer be carried away from the questions even when you re not getting it, his attention will be " HE S A HAPPY GUY' if is a lady , she wont even remb what she ask you she will be nodding her head and be smiling with you. i have done it severally , it works.
lastly read about the company to know about them, when you get it in the first 3munites, you excel.
good luck bro

Good evening nairalanders.

Please I need a career defining advice from profeasionals here.

My question is

1. Should I still include the sales executive job experience I have at d bank or not?

2. If I am to include the work experience, is there a way I can defend the previous mistake?

Please I need sincere advice, it took me a lot of courage to say this out in a public forum...

I admire your courage to get this out in the open.

Think of it this way: what lessons have you learned from the "documentation issue with the customer"?

You can focus more on highlighting the lessons learned rather than trying to "defend the previous mistake"

Seems my advice is coming a bit late. Please update the house on how it went.

Cheers!

Bravo! You are now facing your fears; that's a sign of growth.

You could also make out time- preferably away from the Internet- to think through how you currently go about your job search. What are you getting right? What could you improve? Who else do you need to speak to? And so on.

I'll prefer you step into the interview with OPTIONS so you can project a natural confidence.

Be strong and courageous.

GOD bless you
