‘It’s a pity for Kelechi Iheanacho’ – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said Kelechi Iheanacho’s recent lack of playing time is “a pity” but added that the Nigerian’s turn will come.

The Super Eagles attacker has seen little playing time for City of late, with Guardiola revealing that the arrival of Gabriel Jesus as well as a slight tweak to the team’s formation has led to Iheanacho’s absence.

However, with Jesus injured, the Nigerian may well see more playing time in City’s upcoming matches.

“Kelechi now isn’t playing for the last games. It’s a pity for him because he’s another guy -- all the African guys I train in my life always they are amazing how they are like professionals in the training sessions, ” Guardiola was quoted by ESPN at a Tuesday press conference.

“But I like normally one striker, not two. Of course, when Sergio [Aguero] was injured, players play the game.

“But then Gabriel came and Sergio didn’t play, so the space is what it is. But it is going to happen this situation with Gabriel so Sergio can’t play all the games and, of course, he [Iheanacho] is going to help us.”

Iheanacho has not featured for City since appearing as a substitute in a 4-0 loss to Everton on January 15.

Hmmm... I wonder why most Nigerian footballers never get regular first team football in big clubs. They are promising at first until they buy land and build a home on the bench before being offloaded to a smaller club. Just a few exceptions.

I hope the best for Kelechi. He's a good player, though not excellent.
