Kidnapping is simply the illegal capture and detention of person(s) against their will. It involves placing the captors in confinement for the purpose of collecting ransom or to facilitate perpetration of other criminal acts.
Kidnapping cases has been on the increase in Nigeria, motivated by financial gains. Oil workers, bankers, staff of corporate organizations, children and the aged are increasingly targeted by kidnappers.
Lowering of kidnapping opportunity through enhanced personal security measures is an effective strategy against the threat. Against this background, the under listed security tips are considered useful to enhance our personal safety:
• Vary routes and timing of your movements.
• Information about business, financial transactions and travels should be handled with the highest level of confidentiality.
• Ensure effective security measures are put in place around your home and environment.
• Keep a low profile and avoid ostentatious lifestyle.
• Avoid late night outing and lonely places.
• Be alert and report suspicious and unusual behavior/happenings immediately.
• While walking or driving through hot-spots, be extra-vigilant.
• Move or leave if you feel uncomfortable or if something does not seem right.
• If meeting someone new (official or private), arrange to meet at your own preferred place and ensure that there are handful of people around.
• Provide details on who you are meeting, the meeting venue and contact details to close associates.
• Always inform family members and people around you of your whereabouts at intervals
• Use of branded corporate items such as ties, scarf, T-shirts, branded vehicles etc with discretion outside the office environment and particularly in crime prone locations
• Driving in the centre lane of a multiple lane highway makes it difficult for the car to be forced off the road.
• Do not accept nor offer lifts to strangers.
• Always look out for cars that may be trailing you. Go round a Round-About or neighborhood twice to confirm any suspicion of being trailed. If affirmative, note the occupants and brand of vehicle and calmly drive to a police station or populated location for refuge.
• Always map out your routes well ahead of your trip to be able to explore all possible escape routes
• Ensure that your car is in good condition to avoid breakdown on your trip.
• Ensure that adequate security measures are put in place for your children in collaboration with their schools during drop-off and pick-up time.
• Don’t leave your children in a car unattended to, particularly while shopping, refueling etc.
• Ensure domestic staff e.g. House help, Drivers and Cooks are properly vetted and appropriately referenced with reputable guarantors before they are employed.
• Educate your kids/wards and utility services staff never to talk to strangers or open doors for people they don’t know.

I hope this information will go a long way to help us. But remember God is our protector and helper.
