I want to tell you something that keeps haunting my thoughts.

Four years back (before I decided to turn my back on working for somebody else) I was a Banker

And I remember this man who purchased a vehicle on a lease facility, however, 7 months down the road he made not a single payment.

It seems he began to dodge the obligations and these were the sort of cases my department worked on.

I remember this case very well because of how different it was

And in most of these cases you’d find out that it would be a case of the person losing discipline and sometimes even changing address to escape the debt. This one was different.

This man had actually died. His wife was not aware that his husband owed money on the car. Understandably neither did his brothers nor friends.

We had legal papers to repossess the vehicle. However, what bothered me is what we saw when we arrived at the house.

You see, I remember seeing the woman carrying the man’s child on her back wrapped in a brown (originally yellow) wrapping towel. The man’s brothers had taken over the place and by looks of things we were not the first people to visit to claim an asset.

From her eyes you could see her pain as she watched everything fall apart

I don’t want to judge and say this man screwed his family. Clearly I never knew him although what I saw showed how gloomy his wife and children’s lives looked.

I want you to think about these people for a minute. We both know the kids have a tough life ahead of them. What do you think these kids will think of their father when they are older?

I see families that keep prospering generation to generation because their forefathers/mothers figured out how to make their little become enough for when they are no longer there.

They passed it on as family culture for years making it impossible for other families to catch up.

So every single morning ever since that case my desire is to be that father or grandfather who sets a proper life and future for those that follow.

Any day any minute you can just drop dead and if you have nothing but debt your family will hate you. You will leave an impossible burned upon them

It’s one of the reasons I left employment to start my own business ventures. A 9 -5 pm job on a fixed income was not going to allow me the life my lovely wife and daughters deserve

I know 3 men in delta here, while they were young men they were called junkies, nobody took them serious because they never followed the system. Now years later one is an ex governor, the other own one of the biggest electricity company in Africa and the third is doing very well. It's not today you have to hustle for, but the future

I personally draw inspiration from people like that. Screw someone's system create your own! I was in a bar with this intellect some days ago. Real intellect not the kind that get all wise after a drink or two. And guess what? I really liked the way he broke down systems that we have all been bred to work under and follow. For example; School itself is a system someone else created and used to benchmark people to determine whether they will become successful or not? Rather Good employees or Not? And when you look at the most successful people they completely turned away from that (someone's) system, made and followed their own. We respect them today. Don't we?

These is one of those things no one ever thinks of in Nigeria.

They just want to marry at 25 and start making babies. They have no plan, no goal, not even a trust fund for the kids they have.
neither do they have their personal goals.

I still think it's the dumbest thing for people to procreate (especially in this Naija) without a plan of giving the child the best so he/she can compete with the best of the world.


You see parents at old age still living in rented apartments and people blame the kids for not buying a house for the parent. abeg, how is it the child's fault?

and for those parents who go as far as leaving debts for their kids.... they're a disgrace to Parenthood.
