It is commonly called mosquito fern or the super floating Organism but you should not hold that against Azolla filiculoides, a water fern that is no friend to the biting insect pests. Mosquito fern grows in moss-like mats on still water, spreading very rapidly in the temperate climates of U.S., india, and many other countries including Nigeria. The fern foliage can grow so dense that it crowds out mosquito larvae, giving the fern its common name. It also blocks sunlight from other water weeds and is used as inexpensive weed control in rice paddies in Asia. In the United States, it is a happy addition to backyard ponds with its attractive leaves and tendency to discourage algae growth.
I discover Azolla by share providence on my farm. From no where, I saw this plant covering my ponds at an alarming rate, I got furious and instructed my staff to clear them away. Little did I know that God was only trying to bless and give me a further answer/ solution to my concerns on how to reduce cost of feeding livestocks.

With Azolla, you can reduce your cost of feeding your birds, cows, pigs, goats, etc.... Azolla doubles in biomass every other day, and does'nt need land to do that. It simply grows without soil, and very fast....
To grow or propagate Azolla, you only need to get the male and female spurs which are not expensive at all. It can even be gotten free.

Usages (livestock farmers take note) Using this with koudjis concentrate + palm kernel cake + brewer's spent grain (brewery waste) and a little of others, will make for a good and very cheap feed. A bag of Poultry feed now is N4200. Let somebody out there think out of d box and make money in animal husbandry. Cc pavore9

Members of the genus Azolla are utilized throughout the world for a wide variety of purposes besides its widespread uses as an ornamental in fish ponds and tanks (Lumpkin and Plucknett, 1980; 1982). A. filiculoides is used as a green manure in rice paddies, mainly in Asia, as an inhibitor of weed growth in rice cultivation in China and Vietnam (Kröck and Alkämper, 1991), and as an alternative high protein fodder for cattle, swine, poultry and fish, and possibly as an alternative food source for humans, again, mainly in Asia. It has also been used as a nitrate-rich compost which potentially increases soil organic nitrogen levels and cation exchange capacity. It is used for purification of water, removal of heavy metals (Sanyahumbi et al., 1998) and removal of nitrogen and phoshorous from wastewater (Forni et al., 2001). It has also been used variously as an ingredient in soap production, a cure for sore throats and as a control for mosquitoes in southern India as complete mats disrupt larval development (Rajendran and Reuben, 1991).
