Many countries around the world suspect that Iran is attempting to build a nuclear weapon and NKorea claims to have some. Regardless of whether this is true or not, is there any objective reason why the US, UK, France, Israel, China and others are "allowed" to have nuclear weapons, and others cannot, or is the only reason because they are either western allies or too powerful for the US to subjugate? E.g., would neutral countries have any reason to support the possession of nuclear weapons by the US, but object to nuclear weapons by NK?

Someone should enlighten me on this matter please.

Nice topic. Nuclear weapons are hard to build (refined plutonium and uranium in large quantities plus equipment etc) and the establishment are committed to prevent their proliferation hence NPT and IAEA. Look it up.

It says that the NPT only recognizes five states as nuclear-weapon states because the less number of countries that possess nukes the better.

My question is 'why these countries?' , 'why should any state have it in the first place?'.

Surely you can't allow few states to have nukes and expect other states not to have one.

The few states that have nuclear weapons developed them before they decided to stop other countries from doing same. They know the devastating and catastrophic consequences of letting others develop them plus did I mention how expensive it production process is...

Not necessarily a 'fair' system but the argument is that it's too dangerous for everyone to have, some nations are seen as more ‘stable’ than others e.g. ‘rogue’ states potentially selling them off to terrorists.

Those that have them aren’t necessarily 'allowed' to have them, but they do, not an ideal situation since no-one should have them but that box is already open so the greater powers that legally have them just try to keep everyone else in ‘check’ since the world would be safer place if not everyone owned a nuke.

There’s a treaty that most countries have signed (Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) which is essentially them agreeing not to get them.
