One thing I have noticed on Nairaland is a chain of related events: an action and a reaction; a thread and a counter-thread. For example, a lady created a thread about why ladies should flee from broke guys. Before long, a guy created a counter-thread about why guys should run from broke ladies. Bitterness; acrimony everywhere!

I believe you all have points. The only problem is this shouldn't call for any thread whatsoever. Creating a thread over this issue is pointless and only serves to hurt the opposite sex's inflated ego.

Meanwhile, I have a question for those of you who think it's wrong to say no one should date a broke girl/guy: When you were broke, did you even like yourself? Be honest o.

If from the threads and counter threads about why broke girls/guys should not be dated you still don't know the 'broke' we are talking about, I don't think I can define it for you.

As you said, it's not easy at all. I believe being logical should always trump being emotional. If we all could be logical, this life would be a better place.

I don't think it's a matter of liking or not liking yourself. Love is subjective. Its truest form for me is when you're with someone who sees things in you that you don't even see in yourself.
Like the lyrics of that Celine Dion song:

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eye when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith cuz you believed
You gave me wings & made me fly
I'm everything I am
Because you loved ME

Nice one there. But you need to realize I didn't create a thread saying guys shouldn't date broke girls or saying girls shouldn't date broke guys! My thread serves to put an end to that part of the argument involving the two sexes.

Broke or Rich, I'd always love myself, it isn't narcissism, it's an unquantifiable amount of self esteem.

Keeps me from taking my own life and ish..

To an extent, you are right. I still believe it's a matter of liking or not liking yourself when broke. If someone is broke and he or she does not even like himself or herself, should you feel bad if a girl or a guy doesn't like you? Whatever one's answer to the question in my thread is, there will be people who will love you even if you're broke and there'll be people who won't. Thanks for your contribution though. At least, there's an element of veracity in it.

Your thread still revolve around both the original and counter thread.
Those that opened those threads thought they have a view they need to air and people responded by giving them their own opinion about the issue.

Goodluck trying to end the debate...

IMHO, if someone doesn't like you because you're broke, it's nothing to feel bad about. In fact, I would be glad because it'd mean one less superficial A-hole in my life. There is more to life than just money & people with money know this more than the rest of us who are still trying to reach some level of success. I remember reading a story about Bob Marley when he was in hospital, dying from cancer. He said something about wishing he'd spent more time with his family, instead of being too busy with tours, etc. His wife said, he said, he felt more at peace & was ready to die, knowing that he was surrounded by people who loved him for the person that he was within, instead of Bob Marley the global icon. Those are the kind of lessons those at the top of the success ladder are aware of. Hence some tend to live very simplistic lives because they know it's the little things that money can't buy that make life worth living.

You said being broke is nothing to be sad about. This may be debatable and/or hard to do. But as you said, people should be happy in all circumstances. Thanks for the advice.

No, don't put words in my mouth. I said, being rejected for being broke, is what one shouldn't be sad about. As that saying goes, when days are dark, friends are few. And imo, the people who stand by you through your lowest points, are your true friends. So why should you give a Bleep about people who leave you because you're not good enough or up to their standards? Let them go! Bye! I also didn't say people should be content in whatever circumstance. Keep pushing. Strive for the best. But never forget that the best things in life are free eg. genuine friendships/ relationships, the air that you breathe, etc. Yes, happiness too...doesn't come with a price tag. We hear of celebrities killing themselves everyday even though they live lives most of us envy. Why is that? Unhappiness. Money can't buy everything.
