Most of us are aware of the health benefits of oranges; https://www.trybbbe.com/blog/10-wonderful-ways-oranges-help-body/ , but what about the peels?

Most times we throw away the peels without thinking twice but orange peels actually provide as much use as orange juice.

Here are 10 surprising uses of orange peels.

1. Orange peels make a great mosquito repellent.

Orange peels contain a compound called d-limonene, which is known to repel mosquitoes. To use orange peels as a mosquito repellent, squeeze and rub some peels on your skin.

The limonene will help to keep the mosquitoes away. Alternatively, you can blend some peels and spray it in the areas where there are other bugs like ants and flies. Bugs are known to hate the smell of limonene.

2. They can be used as a fire starter.

Orange peels contain many natural oils that make them easily flammable.

3. Keep sugar fresh.

If you store sugar for a long time, it is bound to get lumpy. One way to prevent this is to put some orange peels in the sugar jar. The oils in the peels will keep the sugar from clumping together.

4. Dandruff Remover.

One of the wonderful uses of orange peels is its ability to get rid of dandruff due to the antioxidants it contains, its oils and acidic content. To use this, dry some peels, blend/grind it and add a little water to make a paste. Apply the paste to your hair, leave it for about 30 minutes and then wash off.

5. Household Cleaner.

Orange peels make great cleaners for household items such as utensils, furniture and sink. To make this, store some orange peels in an airtight container with some vinegar and some water. Leave it for about 2 weeks and then strain the liquid to remove the peels. The left over liquid will make a great cleaner for common household items.

6. Air freshener

Citrus fruits in general have a pleasant aroma and orange peels are no exception. To make some homemade air freshener, throw some orange peels in boiling water. The boiled water will help to enhance the aroma and leave your home smelling fresh all day long.

7. Eliminate shoe odours

Shoe odours are downright nasty and unpleasant. One of the uses of orange peels is its ability to get rid of odours. Just place a couple of peels in your shoes. The peels will absorb the odour.

8. Fertilizer

Orange peels are are enriched with nutrients and minerals which makes them effective as a fertilizer for enriching soil.

9. Lung cleanser

Orange peels have some health benefits too. They are packed with Vitamin C, even more so than orange juice! Vitamin C is well known to be effective against colds and in expelling mucus and phlegm from the lungs. Orange peels are perfectly edible so to get rid of phlegm, dry some peels and blend it into powder form, add a teaspoon of the powder to a cup of water and drink or add to any pure fruit juice or smoothie.

10. Acne and spots remover.

We all want great skin. While some ways to achieve this involves spending a lot of money on over priced products, there are also cheaper and more budget friendly ways to get great skin. Orange peels contain a lot of vitamins which are particularly helpful against skin disorders.

To get rid of acne using orange peels, dry some peels and grind into powder form. Mix it with honey and apply the paste to your face. Wash off with lukewarm water and moisturize. This may be effective against acne and the citric acid in orange peels will help to lighten the dark spots caused by acne.
