How To Set Up A Photography Studio by Samsmartng(m): 9:59pm On May 01, 2017
Hi guys,

I'll be discussing here, how and what types of gear you need to Setup your studio both still and motion photography.
I am not going to bord you with stories but I will make list of the major gear you need to setup your studio and then I will explain their functions.

Importance Of Photography Studio.

A photography studio is a workspace to take, develop, print, record and duplicate photographs/videos. Photographic training and the display of finished photographs/video may also be accommodated in a photographic studio. The studio may have a darkroom, storage space, a studio proper where photographs/videos are taken/shot, and also display room and space for other photography work.

A photographic studio is often a business owned and represented by one or more photographers, possibly accompanied by assistants and pupils, who create and sell their own and sometimes others’ photographs/video.

Since the early years of the 20th century the business functions of a photographic studio have increasingly been called a “photographic agency,” leaving the term “photographic studio” to refer almost exclusively to the workspace. Hope you find this helpful?.

The picture attached below is a studio I setup for a client of mine.

I'm a friend feel free to contact me via call/ WhatsApp 08139453238 for your queries and enquiries.

Hello guys,

Chai!! Let me first of all apologize for posting very late today, I was some how busy in the office today, please forgive me guys, eh do I receive your forgiveness? Alright.

So today I will be discussing with you about space, how it should look like. But I want us to take it easy so that we will get results at the end, you know the saying 'Rome wasn't built in a day' ......ehe!!

SPACE
Get a good room. The room should be bare and white. Ideally, the floor should be concrete and painted with an industrial grade white paint. Avoid carpet, floor padding, or rugs; much of the equipment is electrical, and this could cause a fire hazard.

SIZE
For the ideal size of your studio I think it depends on the space you actually want to make use of, but nevertheless I recommend the following;

10-12' ceiling Height first!
Then for shooting Length...
~ 2-3' for the background and stands
~ 5-6' for subject separation from b/g
~ 2' for subject standing or sitting
~ 7-10' for camera-to-subject
~ 3' for tripod space
~ 3' for photographer to walk behind camera

That adds up to 22' - 24' length

Then for Width...
...assuming softbox usage
...assuming the space to accomodate family groups 4-6 people (up to 4 across, so two rows)
...assuming 30mm FL at 10' distance to subject, provides for a 3/4 length standing shot

~ 6-8' laterally for lights, hairlight booms, etc. and space to walk around to adjust
~ 6-8' for the subject width
~ 6' additional background width needed to fill FOV of 30mm lens 16' away. That takes up to 15-20'

Okey guys, hope you find it helpful? Don't forget to buzz your guy on WhatsApp/call via +2348139453238.

Hey guys,

Let's get to work immediately, today we will be discussing some of those major aforementioned equipment you really need.

• CAMERA
Camera is a must have gear for Photographers, and as a professional am not talking about point and shoot cameras but DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras, either crop-frame or full-frame cameras are perfect for professional photographer as it gives you opportunity to work around its settings and display your creative ideas on photography.

• LIGTHING
Lighting is the most important part of photography (Still and motion) First make sure that your studio will not allow any outside light sources to creep in. For most photography, a small crack under a door won't be a problem, but even that can ruin certain types of shots
In photography, the following are range of light, perfect studio lighting.
RANGE OF LIGHTS;
110WATT, 120WATT, 200WATT, 250WATT, 300WATT, 400WATT, 600WATT etc, you will need stands for the set of lights you choose or you can mount it on wall. You will also need trigger to sync your camera with the lights. Hope you understand? Good!

• LIGHT MODIFIERS
There’s an old rule of lighting to keep in mind when working with the lighting equipment featured in this series: The closer and larger a light source is to a subject, the softer quality of that light becomes.
Conversely, the further away and smaller it is, the harder it becomes. Most studio lighting devices have a reflector that’s either built-in or optional, and whose job is to focus the light on the subject. The size and shape of that reflector and where you place the light will determine the quality of the lighting. Examples;
Reflector, softbox, umbrella, color filter, beauty dish, barn door, snoot, um there are so many, just choose those ones you can use effectively and play around with it, you get it, huh!

Hope you enjoyed it? Let's I forget, buzz me on 08139453238 via WhatsApp/call for our products and services.

Hello guys

We are still on the equipment, so let's go!

• BACKDROP & STANDS
In making choice of backdrop, you need to consider the height, the width and colour. Be sure that the length of the backdrop is extended enough that your subject can actually stand on it and make some dramatic posture. Backdrop colour to choose, if you are a Photographer (still photography) I recommend you use GRAY colour backdrop because it will allow you change the colour of your background to colour of your choice by applying colour filters to your background lights. And if you are a Videographer (motion photography) I recommend you use green, blue, white backdrop. These will help you in your editing, e.g green screen effect, blue screen effect etc. Backdrop stand is what you need to hold and position your backdrop perfectly. I bet, you can't be holding camera and backdrop at the same time taking that your beautiful shots. Yeah!

• TRANSMITTER
You will need to synchronize your camera with your studio lights with help of radio remote trigger.

• STUDIO CHAIRS
Some photos are best shoot while your subject is seating. In that case you need some chairs in your studio, it may be couch or balloon type of chairs.

• CAMERA TRIPOD & DOLLY
Tripods are used for both still and motion photography to prevent camera movement. They are necessary when slow-speed exposures are being made, or when lenses of extreme focal length are used, as any camera movement while the shutter is open will produce a blurred image.

• POWER
You will need extra power source for your studio in case of power failure, it could be Generator, solar energy, inverter etc.

• PHOTO PRINTER
Some client/you might want hard copy of the pictures you shoot, there should be available place/printer to carry out that exercise.

• COMPUTER
For your pictures/videos editing and record keeping, you need computers (Mac/pc) and all the necessary software must be installed e.g Adobe Photoshop.

• MIC
When it comes to video making, visual and audio part of the your videos must be correct, that is you will try your best to get the two right. To avoid unnecessary noise from the background, in your video studio you need to do a little work constructing a sound prove system, Boom mic, radio mic etc to enhance quality audio.

• EXTENSION CABLE
Have extension cable to plug all your equipment. Get power strips that have fuses and surge protection. Label them, and do not plug one power strip into another power strip. Use on power strip for all your fans, one for your umbrella lights, one for your strobe lights, etc. This way, an electrical problem is easily identified, and there is not too much power being drawn from any single socket.

• AIR CONDITIONER/FAN
All of this lighting and equipment will produce a lot of heat. Take into account the fact that you want all of the outside light/noise sources blocked, and you are probably not going to be in a well-ventilated area. Have at least three fans and two air conditioners blowing away from your subject and dissipating the heat as best as possible. Fans can also be used to create dramatic effects with fabrics, clothing, and hair.

Alright guys, with this major equipment, you have professionally equipt studio for your photography passion.

Beauty Dish

Beauty dishes are a great tool for any photographer; the light produced is harder than a softbox but softer than an umbrella. You can also add different modifiers to change how they work. So guys think of adding Beauty Dish to your photography lighting, then you will be well on your way creating beautiful pictures.

Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G.

Many photographers consider the 35mm to be a “sweet middle” general purpose focal length for photography – it is not too wide and not too long either, making it great for photographing. So guys this lens is perfect for Street/portrait Photographers.

Canon EOS 700D /T5i

Canon’s triple-digit DSLR range has long been one of the most popular series of affordable DSLRs. The Canon EOS 700D arrives as a replacement to the EOS 650D, hitting a £650 price tag at launch. It’s also the large, better-featured alternative to the Canon EOS 100D – Canon’s new ‘smallest DSLR in the world’ rival to Compact System Cameras (CSCs). Although it appears that little has changed, the range’s popularity in such that the 700D is sure to gain admirers.

One welcome new feature with the 700D is the ability to preview the camera’s Creative Filters at the point of capture. Previous Canon DSLRs featuring Creative Filters lacked this function, while there’s now also the option to save an unaltered image alongside the filtered shot.

Why waiting when you can make the most out of your photography passion with this gear!
