The fate of 460 workers of the Michael Okpara University of Ag- riculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State now hangs in the balance as the management of the institution has set in motion the process of sacking them on the ground that the last administration employed them without following due process.

Already the university management has stopped payment of salaries of the affected workers and asked them to reapply to undergo fresh screening in what is seen as a subtle way of offloading the workers.

“There is bit of a mess that need to be sorted out,” the Public Relations officer of MOUAU, Mrs. Adanma Odefa said, adding that the problem was created by “the Professor Hillary Edeoga administration (which) hired over 460 people improperly without going the through the right procedure.

“We have this 460 people who were given temporary appointment and the procedure usually is when a staff has a temporary appointment, it elapses automatically after one year if it is not renewed.

The appointment of staff in question elapsed on February this year”. However a staff of the institution who preferred not to be named, told THISDAY that “what we are witnessing now is the triumph of a section of the academic staff that are hell bent on rubbishing everything that Prof Edeoga did including the job opportunities he created for hundreds of people”. He said that a group of academic staff who were anti-Edeoga had been mounting pressure on the Vice- chancellor, Professor Francis Otunta

to sack the affected workers in order “to save money to pay the lecturers”. The affected staff, who are dubbed “temporary workers”, got to know about their uncertain fate following a circular dated April 28th 2017, signed by the University registrar, Dr. Azubuike C. Nwokocha.

In the circular the registrar stated:

“Following the resolution at the family meeting held on the 27th April 2017, all staff on temporary appointment and whose appointment had lapsed are hereby requested to apply for renewal of temporary appointment.

Na wao

Why is this country like this? Me I don't understand anymore. It is better to reduce salary than send them packing when loads of hungry mouths awaits their monthly peanuts.

God help us all

instead of getting jobs, people end up losing the ones they got. the vegetable has crumbled this nation. for Nigeria's embassy to be shut down in Washington because of salaries owed, that will tell you the pain APC and their goonz brought into Nigeria is a worldwide affair.
the burukutu sipping dullard ignoramus should just resign, he might be competent like some Zone Bs agree but he has bad luck.

if there was a contract and it was stipulated in the contract and the staffs signed..

Then the university is right for following due process... But..

I am in Nigeria.... I know there must be a twisted back story to this.

Yes you are correct about the due process of a thing. And like you I suspect that the stoppage of JAMB admission into courses in the management sciences as from 2017/2018 academic session is part of the reason for this since IGR will definetly drop.

People like you are the reason Nigeria is backward. this issue is à local matter between forces within an institution of higher learning. If you cant satisfy your girl friend or wife you will blame buhari.

Prof Hillary Edeoga created a mess in that institution. Recruitment was not on merit and it was lopsided. The school is in Abia but Edeoga massively recruited Enugu indigenes.

Only people who are not in the know would say it is injustice, ask yourselves how these people became staff of the institution. The last administration flooded the whole place with illegal recruitment schedules. The man,Prof Edeoga is a good man,but not a good administrator, the school was run like a one-man show, not heard anything from his 2nd-in-command PRO,Onyinyechi Ralph for a while.
