- Some of the freed 82 Chibok girls have bullet fragments on their bodies

- The minister of women affairs and social development Jummai Al-Hassan said medical test conducted on the girls showed bullets and shrapnel on their bodies

- She said the girls will undergo surgeries to remove the shrapnel and bullet fragments

Some of the freed 82 Chibok girls have bullet fragments on their bodies, the minister of women affairs and social development, Jummai Al-Hassan has said.

The minister in an interview with CNN said one of the girls was taken out of their hostel to remove shrapnel from her body.

“But behind their smiles and brightly coloured clothes lurk memories of their dark past. One of them was absent to remove shrapnel still embedded in her body," Alhassan said.

While the minister who said the treatment would last for a few weeks, she said many of the girls would need to undergo various degrees of surgery to remove the bullets and shrapnel.

AlHassan said it was through medical tests conducted on the girls that the federal government discovered some of the girls needed to be operated on.

“The 82 Chibok girls are currently undergoing medical screening in Abuja. Some of them need surgery; this should be completed in two to three weeks,” she noted.

Some of the girls who spoke said she they were happy living in Abuja.

One of them, Rebecca Mallum, said they take part in some programmes structured by the Nigerian government including games and recreation.

Mallum said: “I really enjoy tailoring and catering. I want to be a doctor in the future because I want to help people.”
