As the National Assembly resumes on Tuesday January 12, 2010 after the Christmas and New Year break, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka will be leading a protest rally same day in Abuja to force the National Assembly to resolve the problem of vacuum created by the absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua since November 23, 2009 for medical reasons.

The protests, which are called by the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), will also hold in London, where the Metropolitan Police have agreed to shift the date to Friday in a meeting with the Nigeria Liberty Forum (NLF) because of expectation that Nigerians in London will turn out en masse.

Speakers expected at the Abuja rally include Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Pat Utomi, Uche Onyeagocha, Kayode Ajulo, Olisa Agbakoba, Femi Falana, Najatu Mohammed, Yinka Odumakin, Sani Uba, among others.

In an interview with pressmen, Balarabe Musa, Chairman, Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), said the present situation would have been avoided if Yar’Adua had handed over to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan. If that was done, he said, Nigerians would not have bothered because there would be no vacuum in the presidency.

On the unconfirmed reports that Yar’Adua’s brain is damaged, Musa said in the present situation, every rumour is possible and every rumour is justified because the government has failed to supply Nigerians with information concerning the President’s health.
