The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar 111, on Sunday described Almajiri system practised in various part on Nothern Nigeria as unIslamic.

According to revered Islamic scholar and leader, the system which encourages children to be sent to distant places in the guise to learn the Qua'ran enthrones poverty and hunger and should be largely discouraged.

The Sultan who spoke in Kaduna at a Pre-Ramadan gathering said that Islam frowns at laziness but encourages entrepreneurship and urged the government, especially those at the state level to pay more attention to the welfare of their citizens...

25 million strength of Almajiri's roaming on the street shouting every morning and evening for food. Thanks to recession, they have reduced a lot. Most of them have gone back to their state of origin. Who gives birth to them? Why give birth when you can't cater for the children. I met a meat seller boasting of four wives and probably each wife would have at three children. The poverty index is so high but they have the super rich within them. Divorce rate among their young women is high.

Almajiris system is an elaborate system to impoverish the disadvantage of the north, saying they are aiding them. Alhajis continue to thrive with kids studying oversea, while the poor enter petty schooling or learns Qur'an by rote.
