Oyo to renovate 4 hospitals with N4.6bn

AS part of the ongoing reforms in the health sector in Oyo State , the state government has approved the rehabilitation and reconstruction of four major hospitals in Ibadan, the state capital, at the total cost of N4.6 billion.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Isaac Owolabi, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing the press after the State Executive Council meeting. According to the commissioner, the four hospitals include Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road; the Oni Memorial Children Hospital; Jericho Specialist Hospital and the Jericho General Hospital.

The commissioner said that the rehabilitation and reconstruction of these hospitals became imperative to reposition the health sector and enhance the health care delivery system of the state government.

Dr Owolabi said that the ongoing reform in the health sector had already recorded success in the rehabilitation and construction of Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, Yemetu, which had been abandoned for over 84 years.

The commissioner disclosed that an initial amount of 30 per cent, amounting to N1.4 billion, had already been paid to the contractors to mobilise them. He stressed that major reforms being carried out in the health sector in the state were supported by the University College Hospital (UCH), with a view to improving the health care delivery.

The commissioner added that Oni Memorial Children Hospital would place a greater premium on necessary and adequate care to children, particularly under five.

Akala is such a fool. People are free to see the shoddy "renovation" he did at Adeoyo Yemetu Ibadan. It's a disaster and billions were flushe the drain.

As long as they use the money to do what they promise to do, i think it is a good move and if someone could advice this dudes, i will say they should tell them to have one great hospital that they might be able to move Uncle Yaradua there from Saudi . . .let us invest in our health sector, so that we can stop wasting money on taking people out of Nigeria at the slightest headache.
Let us hope this annoucement is not just another look good on paper, and yet do nothing, if they mean what they have said and will really do it, it is a good news.

Why can't the so-called press that was at this briefing ask the Commissioner for the specifica scope of work that the billions of Naira will be spent on. The Nigerian press have become the character in the silence of the lambs - see no evil, hear no evil and in the process they become the evil colloborating with politicians to rob Nigeria of her resources.

Will someone please ask the dishonorable commissioner - "what is the sope of work"; that way we (the people) can go to these hospitals and see for ourselves what the billions were spent on and to ascertain if it's worth the billions.

Why not give him time and see what he will achieve with it instead of calling him a fool before hand. I don't know why we are complaining now when all we did here about this governor was to whine and whine. He seems to be getting it together now and all you guys do is continue cursing him. Some governors will allocate that money towards hajj or pilgrimage  but he chose to use it for the benefit of the people.

For renovation. Who told you that people in Oyo are being owed salary?. We need renovation in order to meet the desired standards. 4.6Bn is not out of place to renovate 4 hospitals as long they are not planning to repaint and change the light bulbs only.

This is my state and I know what is happening. Akala is just trying to score cheap political points. This is not the first time he would vote money for renovation of hospital. He did the same to Adeoyo at Yemetu and billions of money were flushed down the drain. Go to Adeoyo and you will see what I am taking about.

Akala lacks the intellectual depth to implement the project. It is purely a 419 project, all towards his 2nd term campaign which has engrossed him. He just wants to "enrich" some political associates via the contract and the state will end up poorer!

I consider your comment an insult to great minds (e.g. Bola Ige) who have governed  Oyo State before.

Those of you commending the governor are not serious at all or you are at best, strangers to happenings in oyo state. Write it down and quote me when the contract is completed. the renovation they are talking about will just be the painting of the outside walls of the hospital compexes and in the best case scenario change of window blinds and bed sheets.
