The Hausa wrong number

this is the most annoying of the five

this is probably in the network providers’ starter packs. Every Nigerian has at one point or the other being called by a man/woman speaking Hausa. Even after repeatedly telling them it’s a wrong number, they will keep calling.

What other thing have you experienced as a mobile phone user in Nigeria?

you know network providers usually recycle some numbers and resell to other people.. i guess thats why strange people call when u just buy a new sim... A yoruba woman once called me claiming I'm using her daughters number ( a SIM i just bought in the north), the daughter later called me to confirm that it was truly her number

I just experienced this yesterday.

The guy was just saying "Hello Muhammed, inane?" I was like, I am not Muhammed and I don't know any Mohammed apart from the one who departed for London some days ago" sad

Why is it only Hausa people that always dial the wrong number? sad
I'm just as surprised as you are grin

Someone calling you and claiming to be a long lost friend

this person will call you and claim they know you from some weird place. And you admit to knowing the name the person used, they will give you a sob story and ask you to send them money. Many Nigerians now know better than to believe a sad story told over the phone

Ha dis one can be so annoying and funny at times. And they could be so authoritative in their narrative. One called me the other day, saying he Bros. Tunde from London. That it had really being a long time since he saw me. How was I doing? He is being hustling in the UK and by next week a friend of his will be coming to Nigeria and he intends to send me some electronic gadgets, computers, phones, etc. He was going to give the (Nigerian) phone contacts of one Mr. Peter. Who I will call.

Meanwhile, he no de give me opportunity to ask piercing questions, he would parry it away with, 'You know se, he don tey na!'
I already knew where he was taking the whole thing to - scam.
Anyway, I was able to ask him, What else do you really know about me, apart from my number? He paused, and as he felt I was not going to stop asking, he started feigning network issues: hello, hello, hello, ... and he cut off.

Well, for me, I was ready to engage him that day, since I had all the time, and after all, na your credit you dey burn. It's always interesting engaging them. Some may actually have gotten other information about you beforehand. They come with all kinds of tricks.

In all, we need to be wary of strange phone calls and messages that are suspicious in all its form. Promise of something largess, scare of family member in dire need somewhere, etc.

Getting an SMS telling you to activate BVN

This one has become so common. You get a text from someone claiming to represent your bank, telling you to send your details to the number.

You won something scam

Most times, you get a call from someone claiming to be a representative of one big company claiming you’ve won. Telling you to send some money or recharge card to redeem your prize. Allnascam.

I never fell for this
