pls watch the video above and see fashola, tackling nigerian developmental/political issues(jan 11/12 2010)
in a common sense and level headed way, almost as if he is(or should be) the head of the nigerian state
why is it that government at the federal level in nigeria cannot throw up ppl like this
Re: Fashola Speaking Almost Like Our President(video) by paddylo1(m): 7:02pm On Jan 26, 2010
i love this quote, from fashola in the video. .amongst the various things he said that made sense

"setting very strict deadlines and timelines
we made time work for us
we used time as efficiently as we could possibly do"

any Nigerian leader that thinks like this is surely on the path to success
the problem we have in nigeria is that most ppl that get to power
spend a better part of their time fighting off real and imaginary enemies
so the concept of using your time well to maximize your impact is often alien

before u know it 4yrs are up and we have to start preparing for the next election which takes away more time
from the true art of governance
i believe this is one of the ares that the yar adua administration manifests a real failure/
which is the lack of appreciation of time management and urgency
in carrying out whatever programmes they propose

On power generation as far we have this issue of national grid no state can achieve stable power.

Even if the states generate electricty, they will still have to handover to phcn to connect it to the national grid and in return such states get little supply
Re: Fashola Speaking Almost Like Our President(video) by Tsiya(m): 7:39pm On Jan 26, 2010
National Grid is very important in managing energy efficiently. Electricity cannot be stored once produced and therefore it is imperative that it is transported to areas of need. Another advantage is since power plants cannot be 100% reliable, there is need to connect them on the National Grid in order to overcome effect of sudden failure of any plants. Countries all over the world have National Grid. As big as America is, they have a National Grid. There is also a common Power Grid across Europe such that if Electricity can be exported across boarders if necessity.

We are talking of 36 states plus abuja not lagos only.If fashola becomes president he won't do anything Cause what we are fighting in this country is beyond what we are seeing now.God Bless Nigeria

Yes you are right that we need a national grid.
However, under normal circumstances, it should not be compulsory to turn in all the power you generate into the national grid!
You should only turn in power you don't need so that others can pay for it and make use of it.
Allow states and other private organs generate and distribute electricity and our power problems would be solved in less than 5 years. Just look at what happened in the telecoms sector.

The reason the government is not willing to review this policy boils down again to the northern hegemony.
If the power sector is privatised, almost all investments in the sector would go down  south both because of the proximity to Natural Gas in the Niger Delta and the fact that the largest market for energy use is in the south,
Almost no investments will go to up north because the cost of transporting gas coupled with the relatively small economy in the north would naturally discourage any investor.

abeg help me tell them PapaBrowne

Why can't the govt just let private power firms generate, transmit and distribute as they please without
govt intervention ?

The thought that power generated in Lagos (for instance) cannot be fully utilized in Lagos (thanks to the federal govt)
is completely nuts !!

Heaven help that Country.

Are you sure about that?I thought that Kano has a big economy? Also adding the likes of Kaduna and maybe Maidugiri.I think if power becomes stable in the north a whole lot of their economy will kick back into action provided that the religiuos disturbances there can be solved.

Sometimes i wonder what the economy of lagos, ibadan, nnewi, aba, onitsha will be like with constant power.

Yeah! Kano and Kaduna do have a pretty sizey economy, but the question is- How do you get natural gas from the Niger Delta all the way to the north? The cost of building gas pipelines all the way to the north will scare away the richest Arab sheik!!

The only other options would have been alternative sources like solar energy, however this is too expensive for Northern State Governments and not profitable at all for any private investor!

What about wind power?
Re: Fashola Speaking Almost Like Our President(video) by PapaBrowne(m): 8:49pm On Jan 26, 2010
^^^^^^
Wind quality all over the Nigerian hinterland is very unreliable!
The only place you can install wind turbines successfully in Nigeria is in the coastal states by the Atlantic ocean!

i think this is why u still have to deregulate the sector
there is nothing like the market forces to give u price discovery

so in the end if people are willing to pay for the power up north
the investments will come

i do agree that the federal govt is afraid that all the investments will be down south
and that the southerners will cut them off at will if they choose
however that is no excuse to not allowing new investments in the power sector to be off grid

that is,Govt can make a law allowing all new entrants to build operate and transmit power
independent of the PCHN transmission facilities
this is impossible now
if they do this, then even if new entrants concentrate in the south
Govt can still use the govt owned grid network to supply cheap power to the northern states
and it will be a win win for everybody

its just a matter of political will, like wale tinubu said
Ppl are afraid that they will no longer be able to chop as minister of power
remember we used to have communication minister,
NITEL Dg,and so on. . these were so called powerful ministries and positions in the past
now with GSM no one cares. . .

Exactly! This is the perfect solution! While the private sector can focus on Lucrative markets like Lagos, the Federal Government will be well able to handle the less lucrative markets! The whole country will benefit!

Just 8 years ago, there were less than one million telephone lines in Nigeria, today there are well over 70 million! Why can't the powers that be just see this and implement same in the power sector
