PGD In Education Or PGD/MSc In Chemical Engineering? by ewa20buredi100: 8:07am On Jun 26, 2017
Hi Nairalanders,
I have been working as a part-time teacher for sometime now. I actually graduated with a BSc in Industrial Chemistry. Though the teaching job hasn't been fulfilling, i have been coping.

Now i have been given an opportunity to further my studies by a family relative who is willing to pay for my postgraduate studies.
The issue is i actually prefer the PGD/MSc chemical engineering route, though the time i will have to spend in running the programme is giving me a rethink.
Then a thought came to my mind to go for a PGD in Education to boost my chances of getting a high-pay teaching job and also to save time. I am currently 27.

Please i don't know what to do, would going the PGD/MSc Chemical engineering route be worth it in the long run or i should just save time by going the PGD in Education route?
Thank you.

It depends on what you want.
There is no perfect answer to the question.
A PGD/MSc in chemical engineering will mean you will spend an optimistic minimum of 2 years to complete the programme, meaning you will be clocking a minimum of 29 years at the end of the programme. Your chances of getting a well paid chemical engineering job is relatively low at that age especially given the fact you don't have a direct BSc in chemical engineering. However, if your goal is to be a lecturer or researcher, then you can go that route and possibly further with time.

A PGD in education will increase your chances of getting a better paying teaching job but truth be told, you will likely never going to earn as much as a corporate staff in an established organization (e.g. brewer in Nigerian Breweries or Guinness). But if you have a passion for education, you can also organize private classes and even think of starting your school.

The choice is all yours.

Thank you sir for the kind response.

I don't think my choice really matters.
What matters most to me now is making use of the opportunity (sponsored PG studies) before me.
I need something that will get my feet on the ground, something that will give me relevance.
I don't know what to do or how to go about it but all i know is that my life needs a change.

Truth be told PGD in chemical engineering is not less than 2years and Msc is around 18 months or more.Reversing to engineering at this stage won't help you either because The Nigerian Society of Engineers won't recognize you as their member since your first degree is not in engineering. Why not consider other career(professional courses) path or do masters in industrial chemistry for better career growth.
