Chapter Five

The remaining few days left for the holidays to be over became hell for Edward. He was devastated so much so that he was disfigured. He didn't ate much food, he had lost his appetite since when Sharon began snubbing his calls.
As if Sharon's problem was not enough, his mum's attitude grew worse. She occasionally bursts into tears whenever she was alone. it was obvious that she had a secret she was keeping away from him.
His suspicions on his mother grew much when he got himself in an argument with one of the village boys around. They where at the football field when the argument started, it began as jokes before it heightened to the level where they insulted each other. Edward didn't mind the insult until when the boy said "The fact that a butterfly flies doesn't make it a bird".
Edward was shaken and that proverb got him thinking. What does the boy mean by that ?. He went home and wanted asking his mum but she was shedding tears when he arrived. He decided to let her be for the meant time till she was fine.

The holiday soon elapsed and it was time for him to return to school, Hakeem had called him informing him he will be resuming the following day. Edward was enthusiastic about resumption, he will finally see Sharon and his friends. He missed their conversations and company. His enthusiasm was interrupted when he remembered his mum. She needed company especially now that she seemed to have much in mind. He thought of how she will be when he is gone. Throughout that night he couldn't sleep due to different thoughts going through his mind.

The following day, he woke up early and arranged his properties. He had to resume early so as to clean his apartment and arrange everything in order to get ready for lectures the following day.
He quickly took his bathe after packing his things and before two minutes, he was ready to live. He walked to his mum who was staring at him without blinking."Mama am ready" he announced dusting his hands.
" alright my son, remember all I have always told you, stay away from trouble"

"Mama you don't have to tell me these things over and over again, trust me mama" he interrupted to avoid another long sermon from his mum.

"mama" he continued" You have been acting strange lately, I don't want you to think about too many things please. I want you to be strong and overcome whatever thoughts you have on your mind"

His mum adjusted her facial expression and quickly wiped the tears in her face to assure him she will be alright. She dipped her hand into the bag beside her and pulled out some amount of money. She gave them to Edward advising him to economise.

Mummy Elizabeth stood watching Edward walk away she couldn't take her eyes off him until he wasn't seen again. She returned to her thoughts. " Am sorry son, this is not the type of life you should be living. I wish I can summon courage and tell you the truth about your father but I am afraid of your reaction on receiving the news. I just hope that when you finally get to know, you will understand my reasons for keeping this from you."

She quickly recovered from her thoughts and retired back to the sitting room.

Sharon wanted to revolt but when she was reminded of what could happen to her dad and his work, she was left with no choice but to give in to whatever Bella wanted.

Bella was getting excited that she was finally going to get Edward. Her dreams would soon come true once she succeeds in getting Sharon out of the picture. She resolved to let him know her true feelings once he forgets Sharon.

Hakeem had called earlier informing him he was also visiting, at least he would get some company since Sharon had not resumed. He had gone to her apartment but was told she was yet to resume, her line was not going through either.

Bella knocked the door with excitement and anxiety to see Edward, she had missed him too much and couldn't just wait to see his cute face again. She stood for some seconds before the door opened. Her excited face changed a little when she saw Hakeem standing before her. He just ruin her day... she was thinking of having time alone with Edward but now Hakeem had spoil her plans.
She gave him a fake smile and went in without saying hi to keem. He didn't cared though, he had developed hatred for Bella ever since she blackmailed him. He was still living under her demands and hoped to get off it soon.
Bella rushed to Edward and gave him a very passionate hug. She was behaving like she had not seen him for years. Hakeem didn't liked her behaviour one bit but needed to shut up to a avoid her rage.

"What's up Edward " she said staring him from head to toe.
"I am fine Bella, I didn't know you are back already until you called" He replied giving her wink.

"Oh my dear you don't look alright, tell me what's eating you up" she asked looking concerned .

"Good boy, I knew you won't dare disappoint me. You had better not because if you do..... you dare family will be in trouble"
Hakeem felt irritated by her lack of shame and remorse. She wasn't ashamed or scared of hurting people in other to achieve her selfish interest.
He didn't utter a word again throughout the remaining part of the journey. He decided to allow Sharon resume before taking a step.

"I won't let anything happen to my family. But my friend needs my help and the only way of helping him I can think of will endanger the lives of my family members." he thought " I have to stop Bella now before its too late".

After a sleepless night of thoughts and reminiscing over how to rescue Edward from Bella's claws, Hakeem didn't seemed to get any way out. He couldn't go to school because he was really stressed.
He went to the market to get some tomatoes and other stuffs to prepare stew. He was still trying to beg for a discount on the price of groundnut oil when a voice beside him said " it's OK I will pay " . The voice was familiar to him but he just couldn't say who it was.
He turned and saw Sharon smiling at him.

"Sharon!!! Your back ? " he asked with surprise and excitement.
"Yes, I just arrived some minutes ago so I decided to get something" she said smiling.
" Are you okay ? " Hakeem asked after noticing her red eyes which indicated that she had been crying.

Sharon took her time in explaining things to Hakeem. She told him about how Bella is the one and only daughter of Chief Nicolas and also about her how Alex (Sharon's dad ) works under him. She also told him about her threats and how she delayed her resumption .

Hakeem was quiet throughout the narration. He didn't utter a word until she finished. " I am also her victim."

Sharon was surprised and eager to listen Hakeem.

"She visited me last semester with a proposal to receive one hundred thousand Naira in order to ruin your relationship with Edward. I rejected it without having to think twice. She knew I will tell Edward about it so she threatened to kill my family members if I dare utter a word to anyone. I underestimated her thinking she didn't know where I come from not to talk of my family. She brought out my address and the picture of my family members to confirm that she knows everything. She left my place and went to Khalifa and since then your relationship has been undergoing serious problems." He narrated amidst anger and bitterness.

Sharon was very shocked at Hakeems story. She became more afraid of Bella and her connections.

"Did you say her dad is Chief Nicolas, the famous business merchant of kafanchan ?" Hakeem asked interestingly.
"Yes, he is the owner of the famous Memsy Cement Industry, he is also an ambassador of many product brands. He is also planning to run for public office in the coming elections" she replied.

Hakeem nodded like he just got the solution to all his problems. They agreed to keep each other's secrets for the mean time till they have a firm grip on Bella.
