 THE MASTER SOUL WINNER
Christ as we read previously is the master soul winner. He began the work of winning souls unto the kingdom, starting with the calling of the twelve as we see in John 1:35-51, Luke 5:8-11&27, Matthew 4:17-22, Mark 1;16-20. As disciples and followers of Christ, on whom the commandment of winning souls for God’s kingdom was given, and as partners with Christ in the business of soul winning, it is pertinent that we know and understand certain fundamentals in soul winning.
For you as a Christian to be an effective soul winner, you must know and understand the following;
1. It is the number one priority of God’s kingdom: The reason for the coming of Christ to the world was to save men (souls). God is interested in the souls of men, and wishes that none should perish but that all should come back unto Him in repentance. That is why the gospel must be preached in all the world before the coming again of our lord Jesus Christ. The souls of men are God’s priority in this world and He demands that his children partake in the business of winning souls for Him.
2. You were saved for this purpose: Your salvation was not just so you would inherit eternal life, then it ends there. You were saved because God loves you, and the same way He loves you is just the same way He love the person next to you who may not be saved at the moment. That is why we are partners with Christ, to spread the word of God’s love unto the unsaved in our world. Thus use your salvation to fulfill God’s purpose in your life.
3. The work of the Holy Spirit in soul winning: When you got born again, and came to Christ, God gave you the Holy Spirit as your guide. No one can function as a Christian without the Spirit of God within that person. It is the Holy Spirit that makes us the Christians we are. For anyone to preach the gospel, it the Spirit of God that directs such. The Spirit gives you utterance and the words to speak. The Spirit also leads you to pray for lost souls, and also leads you to souls for whom God has prepared for the gospel. That is why we need to train ourselves to learn to listen to, and understand the voice of the Holy Spirit when it speaks to or gives direction, commandments and guidance to us. Yield yourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit is the author of the bible. (2nd Timothy 3:16)
4. The place of prayer in soul winning: Praying is a very important factor in the life of every Christian, and not just when engaging in soul winning. Nevertheless, when you are a soul winner, you must be prayerful about it. Every Christian needs to pray for souls that are lost, that the gospel of the lord would get to them. Prayer also strengthens you and empowers you to preach the word without fear or favor. Prayer prepares the ground for the work of soul winning, it prepares both the preacher and the recipient of the word as the Spirit of God determines. You must make prayer a foundation of your Christian life.
5. The Word of God: For you to be effective in soul winning, you must know God’s word. The bible is the word of God given to us. When we preach, we preach the words in the bible. As a Christian who wants to be effective in the number one work of God’s kingdom which is soul winning, you must be knowledgeable in the bible. You must know God’s word for yourself before you are able to share it with others. Constant study of the bible and fellowship is necessary. Study the word of God for yourself. Know the word. Have it in you, in your spirit. Constantly build yourself up with God’s word, thereby you will have enough of it in you to be able to share it accurately with others.
The business of soul winning is not strictly based on the guidelines as stated above. Albeit knowing and bearing these things in mind are necessary for you to be effective. The Holy Spirit is what actually has preeminence in soul winning.
Another important aspect to understand is that despite the fact that all persons are equal before God, not every approach will work on just anybody. In soul winning, your approach to a particular person may differ per se in the way and manner from which you would attend to another person. This may be necessitated in the consideration of factors like social standing, office, background, education, culture, economic factor, race, religious/personal beliefs etc. There are times when you need to employ tact in you approach to preaching to certain persons. Like Christ himself did in John 1:47-50, when addressing Nathaniel. You can use complements to disarm tough people. Diplomacy and patience for persons who may prove to be stubborn etc, (2nd Timothy 2:24-25).
God’s grace as u amply employ your time and resources in the propagation of the gospel of our lord Jesus Christ.
