Fathers will be able to take up to six months off on paternity leave while their baby’s mother returns to work, the Government will announce today.

They will have a legal right to take the place of the mother at home for the last three months of her nine-month maternity break.
Fathers would be eligible during that three-month paternity leave to statutory government pay of £123 a week.

They would then be allowed to take an additional unpaid three months off, in effect providing families with 12 months of parental leave.
Ministers believe the measure would allow mothers who earn more than their partners to return to work earlier than would otherwise have been possible. Government data has shown that about 350,000 working mothers give birth every year. Two thirds return to work.

Wetin concern me with USA.  but I understand that you can apply for STD - It generally covers half to two-thirds of your salary, and lasts for 6 weeks.

we have been culturally conditioned not to accept this kind of stuffs. women in our society are cultured to be take of things like this. homemakers and caring of the children are the womens job, while men work.

Yes, not everyone but you will be surprised that many may . This not exactly a gender role reversal. It's not like you have to "wash the dishes", "cook the food" while your wife is away - This is more about spending quality time with your very own flesh and blood.
But again I see your point - the cultural set-up may hinder the acceptance.

yes its definitely a gender role reversal especially in a society where upkeep of the house is usually the womens job who mostly stay at home. since the woman works from morning to night, and the man stays at home, hes expected to at least keep the house clean/make something for the wife to eat when she comes home tired. taking of a child is not a disability that allows person to use it as an excuse not at least keeping the house clean.

If you look at it from that aspect yes, but also have in mind that in most Nigerian homes, you have what we call house helps innit?
So, if you have a house help to do the cooking, washing and all other stuff, what stops a man from taking care of his own baby?

It's not a bad idea at all. At least, u will get to do d nappy thingie while spending time with ur flesh and blood. Lol

I kinda like it. Babies fully fed do nothing but play & sleep anyway and since I'm the indoor type, I go just dey house dey play PS, watch movies and do other stuff I like while my salary comes in everymonth for 6months. I definitely prefer the little stress of home-keeping & taking care of my baby to the mad stress of the work place. Me, I go do am GLADLY.

Babies fully fed sometimes are impossible, especially when they're teething. They cry non-stop, are always irritated and want 100% attention. You might not have the space for PS and movies.

Of course it will not work in that culturally backward country of ours where people still have a stagnant mindset comparable to people who lived in this world back in 1755.
