There has been a little controversy of recent over a type of bone that is commonly used in some Nigerians meals - especially moi moi and agidi.

A Nigerian on Twitter claimed that this bone is actually called a "brisket bone" instead of "biscuit bone" which Nigerians have called it for ages. I initially believed him not until there was an attempt to refute this claim by a Nairalander who insisted that the name of the bone is actually "Biscuit" and not Brisket.

Out of confusion and utter perplexity, i decided to put my superior research skills to test. What I found was shocking! The real name of the bone is neither biscuit nor brisket.

The bone is called a Spongy Bone.

According to the Britannica
. . .Cancellous bone, also called trabecular bone or spongy bone, light, porous bone enclosing numerous large spaces that give a honeycombed or spongy appearance. The bone matrix, or framework, is organized into a three-dimensional latticework of bony processes, called trabeculae, arranged along lines of stress. The spaces between are often filled with marrow and blood vessels.

Bros its biscuit bone because its just a metaphor for "Soft bone" and since biscuit is soft, it is used to name it. Its "biscuit bone", and its not primarily the real name thats why you cant find it in the dictionary, its mainly used to identify it.

Abeg who apart from me know say some biscuit bone sweet pass meat self.

Sort of. . . Biscuit is a proper nomenclature that describes the nature of the bone. Brisket Bone on the other hand is utterly wrong.

By the way, Soft Bone is a disease.

Oh c'mon ...gawddamit! ...am tired of hearing brisket bone! ... biscuit bone! ... Chrisplease bone!

It is biscuit bone _not because of its literal meaning but biscuit signifies the softness n easily chewable component of the bone! ... Take as a slang!

Learn english! ...that you will use in your monthly presentations n day to day conversations ...not English dat yu will only use when communicating with a butcher or your sweetheart ..when yu hv to tell her to add brisket bone to you meal! _wTf! _Even if brisket bone sounds right ...I will still use biscuit ...sounds better!

My easy life n success is enough for me to have enemies from my father's house ...now ....trying to form Behind! ..by correcting my Grandma dat its bricket not biscuit meat! ... cry

This is my field, let me help out. There are basically two types of bone tissue surfaces.

A tissue is just a collection of similar cells, hence, a bone tissue is just the collection of bone cells known as Osteoblasts.

The tissue outside the bones are called cortical or compact bones while the ones inside are called cancellous or SPONGY bones.

Their difference is in texture. While cortical bones are hard and protect the outer layer of the bone, the SPONGY bones are soft and lie inside.
Now, the real issue. Is it biscuit or brisket? The truth is, both words are just metaphors, like when guys call 20(or is it 50) naira, white.

It can't be brisket bone. It is biscuit bone because it shares a similarity in the texture with a biscuit. Brisket is not even a metaphor for hardness but a type of meat.

I hereby close this argument. Rise!

My brother, next time you go to market, tell the meat seller to give u spongy bone & see what happens after if they will not direct you where spong is being sold.
Nigerians call it biscuit bone & its final, any other name you come with. you are on your own
