In some tribes and cultures, Magun is unnecessary. If a woman sleeps outside of her marriage, the effects are felt by the children and even the husband, as they become sickly and die. |

rali123: Barbing/ shaving of hairs was never used to prove innocence or ascertain complicity of the widow in the murder of the man. It was done as a sign of respect to the dead man. Not a lot of people practice that now. |

pinkpant: Fattening room does not really mean the bride will be fat but looking healthy... It's just a culture amongst the efik people. During the fattening room session, They feed the bride with healthy native foods, she's been advised on how to take care of her husband's house, how to keep her man and how to cook different types of cuisine to keep her husband stuck at home... During this period, she's been taken care by experienced elderly women, they massage her body (traditional spa) with "ndom" (traditional white chalk) and her body is smeared with traditional pomade (not all these foreign bleaching cream) During these period, her husband is not allowed to see her until the D-Day which she's gonna "she's gonna shine like a diamond" And on that day she's gonna dance some seductive traditional dance when coming out of the fattening room, then imagine you r reaction as the husband will be on that day The fattening room is almost going extinct... 2 Likes |

Hmm... First heard of that fattening room during my nysc days at eleme, Rivers State. I like that one... They want the babe to add up before marriage day. She practically does nothing during the run-in days. |

Do igbos still treat their widows like that? Shave her hair, make her sleep in the same room with her dead husband and all that? I thought they stopped all that...if they still do, na wa for them oh. Why would they make the woman suffer like that? And I'm sure they don't treat their widowers like that, I'm sure they find another wife for them. Why do they make their women go through hell when their husbands die? It doesn't make any sense. |
